MEXICO CITY ? Troops at a highway checkpoint discovered 17 kilograms (37 pounds) of cocaine when they searched the car of a federal prosecutor, the attorney general's office said Tuesday.

The agency announced it had opened a criminal investigation on drug charges against Juan Manuel Aispuro Gastelum, who had worked at the attorney general's office in the state of Baja California.

Aispuro was arrested on Sunday at a checkpoint between the towns of Sonoyta and San Luis RDio Colorado south of the border with Arizona.

Troops found 15 packages of cocaine under the back seat of his sport utility vehicle.

The attorney general's office said in a news release that Aispuro had been hired in December 2002 in Mexico City and had transferred to Tijuana in February 2004. It said he was working on case backlogs and statistics there.
