Asuncion Spearfishermen provide party food and entertainment.
these spearos had a full day yesterday...surfing in the early morn and spearing fish the rest of the day. They provided the fodder for our Sunday
Disca Party...yellowtail sashimi and some nice calicos for the disca to go with the pulpo....ummm yumm.
Nomad Eddie and his lovely esposa Suzie ended up staying with us and also joined our family and amigos in what turned out to be a pretty good party.
sirenita's boyfriend can be blamed for this mornings foggy brains...Max..one of the spearos who is russian had a shooter contest...mexico vs
russia...mexico won!
good thing I took this photo before they opened the next bottle of tequila!!! sirenita kept the boys on track and made sure they didnt end up in jail
or in the emergency ward!!hahahahha

We are coming down soon and look forward to the disca parties and the great food. Should be good this year with Baja Gypsy kids. We will be missing
ours so I will need some youngsters to go boogie boarding with.
Bajaboy's son is still a little young for some of the big waves down there.

Shari: What is the cooking thingy that the fish whisperer is using? Is it a big wok over a large burner like a turkey fryer? It appears to have a
flat lip and a rounded bottom (not unlike jea...er, never mind).

Our friend has one and calls it a Mexican Wok. Looks like a hubcap with a ring in around the inside edge so you can pull out the stuff you are frying
to keep it warm or to keep from over cooking. I've seen them at some of the roadside stands for sale.

I have been fishing baja for years and now I am getting certified to dive because i would like to start shooting fish also, Is it legal for gringos to
use spear guns in Mex? Or do they just do it anyway?

It's illegal to spearfish WITH tanks in Mexico. Breathholding w/ speargun is fine. Also you must have a Mexican fishing license.

spearfishing is a very popular sport here...but free diving only....juan prefers this method of fishing as you get to CHOOSE your fish not just wait
for one to take a lure...plus it's beautiful down there.

I was hoping Shari would answer. A "disca". can be used over a burner or fire. Very much like a wok.

OK...It's a disca and is a classic baja must have thingy...this one we bought at the hardware store and use it on a propane burner outside for
fritangas of lobster, pulpo, fish etc...but my favorite one is one that David P made us cause it has screw in long legs so you can take it apart to
store for camping and you just set it over the fire...just wonderful.
Here is Nancy and Zoe in san roque with the disca favorita.

Nice! I plan on bringing a pole spear down there, and I was actually wondering how the conditions were. Looks like I'll need a barbeque too. What are the water temps in early June like?

water temps in June are not for the faint of heart....friggin cold as there is a cold current plying through our area that time of year. The ocean
doesnt warm up till august.
I think pole spears might be illegal...hawaiin slings are...you are supposed to only spear fish with a speargun.

I read just this week that they are starting to predict a La Nina and thus water temps will remain below average for the San Diego. Bummer.

So, a speargun possession for fishing is legal in Mexico?? We went fishing some time back and my friend was warned not to use the speargun or even
bring it out but he also had diving equipment, so maybe this is where the confusion came in. Everything looks great and now I know I am coming down
with my navigator of 35 years, Donna keeps me on track and on schedule when traveling I like to get side tracked while in Mexico, LOL. Now, since I am
retired she will have to accept the side track thing, as "NO Hurry, NO Worry, Just Fun," LOL Take care and Be safe. bajafun777

From what i understand, you can use a speargun or polespear only if you are freediving. If you have scuba gear you aren't allowed to use either.
