Draft video of our Rosarito Beach land concession struggle... UPDATE! Full Video PICKED UP BY AFN ON 9/1 :)

UPDATE: Great news! AFN has picked up the FULL 11 minute version on their website today! WooHoo! http://www.afntijuana.info/afn/

Here are the new links for those just getting on board this issue:

Spanish Full Version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCRflD9USro

Spanish Short Version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZui7JxeA8U

English Short Version (the draft- yea yea, I'll get to doing the two english version over): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzPwvHLE6Wo

We have sent the video to all news agencies, all PROFEPA offices and all relevant Rosarito Beach office.

-----------------------------
I put together a three minute YouTube video about our struggle to gain control over the beach we have the FMZ concesion for.

The angle I am using is : Rosarito Beach is no longer walkable because beach erosion and illegal buildings have split it in half. It goes on about how the buildings endanger the neighborhood and prevent a seawall from being built.

I remember an ex-pat survey a few months back said taking strolls on the beach is a favorite activity- so that's the angle I used. Have to have an angle the press would like- not just a land struggle with a violent squatter or a fist fight over preserving disabled parking...

Let me know what you think before we do the Spanish version. This one is the quick draft- just want to see if it makes sense to anyone. We're open to suggestions...

Link to Draft video. Three minutes, English subtitles, English narration:
(Deleted 8/30- See last post)

Link to PRIVATE FULL VERSION (See explanation a few posts down). English subtitles, no narration- just music:
(Deleted 8/30- See last post)

[Edited to add a link to the private full video]
[Edited 8/30 to delete draft video links]

I think it is a good video, clear. I like the simple language and the images that demonstrate what you are saying. I think that the words add emphasis and are not a distraction but clarify for those who read or are hearing impaired.

This film is informative and clear, I was aware in vague terms of the issue, but this makes it very clear.

My only suggestion would be that you tell us, your audience, what we are to do. You only ask for vague support of this cause. If you can capture interest to watch the entire video, that is also the time to get a "buy in" from your audience. If you don't hook them then, they will be off to the next link on Utube, especially if it have women in bathing suits.

Not sure what to do about the text boxes. Lot's of people don't turn their speakers on. Maybe it's the red or the text box layout.

Yes, the squatters advertised the property for sale for $199K. The tower is empty, but has been finished two years. We hear they don't have individual condo papers to sell them. It's a three-tower project and the worry is the squatter is selling to the condo developer (same sized building footprint too).

I know there will be questions about the details I couldn't cover in this three minute chopped-down version. I did make a ten minute video that covers pretty much everything. The problem is it is too long to get public attention and it'll get me killed. It makes the Rosarito Police and PGJE look unprofessional and incompetent and they wouldn't like that.

I have kept the link to that video "private" by invitation only. I don't mind if you guys watch it for the purpose of helping me craft the final video. No narration on it, just salsa music and more red text boxes. It is ten minutes long- so grab a beverage and thanks for taking the time to watch it.

Yes, but the narration just reads what is in the text boxes. The Spanish version will have the narration and the boxes too. Thanks for watching.

Woosh, it looks to me like the ocean will take care of a lot of the problem eventually. I can't believe that someone would be dumb enough to buy any of those federal zone projects.

Problem is the neighborhood behind it will go first I think- or I'd be content to wait them out. Looks like the street will go first. Thanks.

Wow. The videos seem to fully explain the situation clearly enough. You won me over. Too bad I am not in charge.

Props to the concession holder on the smackdown but it appears that Tila has the cops in her pocket? I would be concerned for safety of family and property based on the folks she hangs with. After all she is protecting her 199K. I agree that the ten minute version may not be good for one's health. Too bad you cant send a coipy to her employer but then she might get fired and be across the street full time?

Noble battle the concession holder is fighting but to what end if no one in government wants to lift a hand to help?

Are any of Hugos holdings in the federal zone? Maybe he doesnt want to 'shine a light'?

Best of luck to the concession holder and be very very careful.

"...but to what end if no one in government wants to lift a hand to help?"

Exactly where we are at with this. Once the final video is out in Spanish maybe someone local with influence will see it or pass it on. It's all we can hope for at this point. You're right- ticking off the PGJE and Police won't get land cleared or a seawall built.

I'm really surprised that PROFEPA isn't bleeding them, it seems like a blatant encroachment of the federal zone would be a sweet harvest. Good video, by the way. I hope you can get it done without hiring a lawyer, their only objective is to drag it out forever, which is easy to do.

my two cents worth

Positive: Done good. Clarity of the issues was made. Subtitle was a smart idea.

Negative: Help you how, where? Still don't have a clue. You need to make that crystal clear. Got a Website to follow up for info? Facebook? Link it all up Dude!

I really don't know what help I need or who to get it from or I would ask for it. That's why I put this draft video up first- so I hope someone has some ideas. The short version in Spanish will have a good hook seeking specific action as soon as I figure out what that is.

Even if "land deals" have been made, the video gives local and federal agencies a reason to re-think their decisions. I would think there is some "public safety" emergency clause that lets the Mexican federal government build the seawall to protect the hundreds of houses behind that street. The "Private" long version has the original "Lotification Map" from 1975. You can pause the video to check it out closer.

We will get the Spanish version over to some Baja Facebook groups when it is done. Thanks for the help.

just watched the first video and I think it is good and explains the situation well.

welcome to activism you're passionate about something that is important and you have to communicate it to everyone you can reach. you have to do what you can to get your message out which will hopefully lead to justice served through the avenue of public pressure. this will help to unite the citizens, maybe form a civic association so you can better organize and network. (if you haven't done so already)

i find videos are a good way for me to express myself in spanish where I cannot do such a good job in writing

for example here's a video I did on the dump in Loreto
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDl0YfWOqF8

i didn't understand the problem you had been describing for so long now I do after seeing your 3 min video. It is hard to believe that a high rise went up so close to the pacific ocean that waves break on it. I agree that the ocean will take care of this eyesore eventually. hopefully before they decide to build another tower on the runoff channel something can be done to stop it.

I will contact the Tijuana Coastkeeper to see if she knows any leads that can hep you. She is fantastic and has excellent contacts. I will send a u2u early in the week to you on this.

stay strong

Thanks for that post Pam. I really didn't want to be an "activist"- but sometimes our battles are chosen for us. I'm finding that YouTube videos get watched in Mexico because people believe and understand what they can see with their own eyes. We exhausted all the normal channels we knew of- so thanks for helping spread the word. We hear the squatter is trying to get a judge to overturn the concession- but she doesn't have any ownership paperwork to make that happen- unless dollar bills are the kind of papers that work. It's crazy this battle is for land totally surrounded by water- isn't it? Luckily I do video once in a while so I had the history of the concession on film. (The longer video shows the ugly side of this battle with the police and PGJE giving the squatters support and the condo people being more active in taking the concession over for their profit.)

This has been like a slow-motion train wreck but it has brought the neighbors closer together and that is always good. It really took people a few yeas to digest we were doing this for the people and had no profit motive. Hopefully the Spanish version of the video will be seen by someone who can help. You are welcome to share the links with anyone who can get this done. Thanks again Pam. Really.

I think that should read, "Props to Woooosh on the smackdown." He's just being modest, but he's already claimed the physical victory in another place.

Good on ya, Woooosh.

About the music......maybe something a bit more somber. The Cuban beat makes me want to say Hell with it all and start dancing.
Downbeat story with upbeat music is a bad combination.

Good video, at any rate.

I like the 3 minute version. If you want the "private" version to stay private, take it off of youtube. Afterall, you just put a link to it on a public website and youtube videos are easily saved to disk. The free software I have automatically makes copies of all videos I watch.

Every time I put good music to a YouTube video- they say it is copyright protected (it likely is). The canned stuff has limited options- but I'll work on that.

(and for the record... I had not been in a fight since hockey in college. Didn't have much choice as both times the squatter guy threw the first punch (or his lame flying kick attempt). My American family is mortified and my Mexican family couldn't be more proud. My nephews said I should have kneed him in the face while I had the handful of hair- but pounding his face into the gravel by his hair just came naturally. No one likes getting their butt kicked in public by a senior citizen on a Sunday afternoon. lol)

Thanks Rico. It's hard to ask for feedback on the content and keep the long version totally private at the same time. The long video has the gory details and the documents. Maybe someone at PGJE will see the case number on it and take a second look, or maybe someone higher in PROFEPA in Mexico City will see the concession numbers and do more research. It's a tough call to keep it quiet or ask for nomads to help- but since they have already threatened to kill me it does little good to keep quiet. I'm def a stubborn CT Yankee.

Start a poll... ;) All I know is if I continue to do nothing but whine in my posts every few months about this, nothing would ever happen. You always miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Hopefully this discussion will help me pick the best path to move forward. Thanks Rico.
