Anyone rented with AVIS?

I've made a reservation with AVIS as it seems to be one of the few companies that will allow you to take a rental car into Baja. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Any problems at the border? I had considered walking across the border and renting in TJ, but since I need to return the car late on Sunday, I would have to use the airport location. By the time I figured in all the cabs and time it would take, renting in the US is cheaper and more convenient.

Yep. Rented a minivan from Avis for two trips to Bahia de Los Angeles in April and October of 2003. Both times got a online special rate of $249.00 per week. Bought Mexican ins. from them and total was right at $400.00. Avis was the only national co. I could find that would let you go past Ensanada or San Felipe. Unlimited miles included. The only real catch was in the paperwork it stated you could only drive on paved roads, if you drove on dirt roads the coverage on the vehicle was voided. We figured the road to Camp Gecko was made of rocks, so it didn't really qualify as a dirt road.:biggrin:Got back to the U.S. and just hosed off the heavy dust and turned it in, no problems.

Cool! I'm glad to hear it went well. I did a ton of research and checked with AVIS a few times just to verify that the car could be taken anywhere in Baja. With insurance, I think it's going to be about $260 for the five days. It seems pretty reasonable to me. The other thing I noticed was that the rental cars in Mexico don't come standard with air.
