Loreto: Humpback Whale released from entanglement from gill net

On Monday, February 14th, the panga Inconforme y que... with Captain Alberto Davis and blue whale specialist Michael Fishbach came upon a humpback whale off Punta Baja, who was completely tangled in a fishing net. The whale was freed after Michael jumped into the water and cut it off with a four inch pocket knife. As Michael cut away at the net, Captain Alberto and the adult passengers pulled the net into the boat. Apparently this process took only a few minutes and was successful. Some photos follow and when I get video (all of it is on film!), I will work with it and post it. In the meantime, after the net was removed the happy humpback waved its fluke and breached several times.

I have written more detail in my report in the link below but too pooped to write more right now

flyfishinPam, Thanks for the report. Gill nets should be banned in deep water. Better yet, they should be banned, period.

Great post Pam. I've gotta ask, are those pix of the same whale?

now THAT was a jump for JOY!!! well done amigos....helping whales is entirely possible as they cooperate and go very still when you are attempting to free them.

WOW !!!

I sometimes get so discouraged (and disgusted) with humans and all of the problems, wasted potential and opportunities, insensitivity, apathy, greed, violence, drugs . . . etc., etc., etc..

This post, and the amazing photos really tug at the heart and provide some needed balance.

What a great story.

Thanks Pam !!

And my heartfelt thanks to Michael Fishbach, Alberto Davis, and the others aboard Inconforme y que.

Something tells me this video is going to "go viral" ~ as well it should!

Fantastic photo - glad these guys were in the right place at the right time to help out this humpback. So the whale was calm and collected while Michael was swimming around him working with the net? Wow.

net's SUCK!! and should be outlawed,, in the late 80's I trowed a lure from cobo to the island's south (200 miles) then to the big island then to resurection bay alaska and 3 or4 times a day I would have to pull my lure in and clean off all the pieses of net...many,many mile from land...a reel bitter eye opener...the only net I feel that should be in the water is a small bait catcher:fire::fire::fire::mad::mad:
