back to San Miguel de Comondu

After sampling the incredible wine many families make...we just had to go back and stock up on more of that wonderful nectar of the gods. So before our camping trip to Agua Verde in Semana Santa, we headed up into the canyon taking the Insurgentes...Pancho Villa route. There was alot of machinery working on the road and locals say it will be done in August which will be great for all.

Nedida's nice rental room was rented out to the road crew engineer but we had a very nice visit and bought more of Vladmir's delicious pomogranate wine.

this is the room that they rent...sweet!

another visit with Adan, the palm furniture maker and more wine purchases from him...his wine is like port! he's working on some new pieces....lovely stuff

We also chanced to meet a talented paisano who is restoring a place there which is a phenomenal undertaking...he has done a splendid job and is also a great writer about the life of the vaqueros...really mellow fellow.
Here are some photos from my walkabout

check out how cool this streetlight is!!!

there was a gorgeous stand of bamboo along the aqueduct.

here a little album with more pics of this magical place

Doesn't she just!
... and the winemaker guy also has it. Shari gave me her last bottle of pomegranate wine-- thanks again, Shari, and Rica and I had a little early-birthday-rented a house-celebration, and WOW! that stuff kickzzz it!!
I'm reminded of the I Love Lucy skit where she's sells Vega-mita-vitamin and gets totally ripped,
"... and its so tasty, too!"

Sooo ready to head up there and go exploring.
Thanks for another great travel report and fotos.

Great pictures! Comondu is so photogenic!

Every time I go someone has fixed up another building, and the towns look so beautiful. I hope the road brings only good things to the nice people there!

yes Paula...one of the neat things is that the area is strictly controlled by INAH and any modifications or fixing up has to be done in strict adherence to historical design which will hopefully preserve the quality of the area...the only eyesore there is the ugly steel cancha the government built..it totally ruins that end of the village.

Shari,

Last night I sat on my back porch with a glass of wine and a candle burning amidst my cactus collection recently moved from indoors.

I was channeling your appreciation for Comondu and was supplementing the trance with my own memories of the villages...:saint:

I was imagining a quiet and relaxed evening around a fire ... and living there somehow....sometime....

If DT knows of a cure, tell him NOT to send it.....I like the fantasy:cool:

Thanks for sharing....;D

good question on the wine...as far as I know Vladimir is the only guy who makes the pomogranate wine and I bought 5 bottles of which I gave one away, drank one and am trying to save a couple as I tasted one of their bottles that was aged 3 years and it was incredible...aging it is the ticket!!

Lots of families there make wine and they let you taste some before you buy it but the bottle you get doesnt always taste like the one you buy if the taster was aged. The man at the Tecate store, the first place on your left coming into the village has superb wine as does Adan, the furniture guy. Buy lots is my best advice...seems like they always have some on hand...not sure when they make it but it sounds like they always do.

Nice find on the wine........I was there on a moto in early March....we found the oasis to be secluded and remote but very scenic. The folks we met were kinda shy but very nice....it's obvious that change is coming with pavement. There were contractors and workers beginning to renovate that central area....but I wonder if the farmers and regular residents will appreciate the traffic that's coming their way.....
