Paved to Rancho Grande by the first of the year.

From www.sanfelipe.mex.com:

And from Doug Magee at Gonzaga:

The road is paved and open to "Okies Landing". It is paved to Juan Pablo's ( Popeye's) and should open by the end of this month. That leaves only about 15 miles to our camp. and they graded that last week. Not perfect but graded !

Now I hear they are going to run another Baja 1000 which will destroy all the grading ....O 'weeell.
However , the closest " Beer" is Rancho Grande. So I think the "Construction Crew" will keep the road in good shape ??

It is scheduled to be Paved to Rancho Grande by the first of the year. The Ranch is putting a chase under the road now , so they can service the Palapas with Power and Water after the road is completed.

Then on to Hiway one. To be complete in 2000 something....

I don't think the B1K will impact that graded part at all. I'm pretty sure (looking at course map; talking with those pre-running) that the course is all north.

The 1000 isn't running down that way this year.....so, no worries!

Thanks for the update....

Right... so if I understand this... the remaining rough 10 miles we drove in July, has now been re-graded? Well, is it getting cold where the devil lives?:O

What Okie's Landing looks like from the road... a few concrete slabs on a cove. Was a fishing camp for tourists in the 1960's. A cave was used as the ice house.

Located between El Huerfanito and Punta Bufeo/ Gonzaga Bay.

Just returned from Campo Beluga...the road is NOT paved or open to Okie's landing...there IS heavy construction going on AT Okie's...in fact the graded haul road is about 50 yds from thr concrete pads shown in Davids photo.

I say this because on the way south on Sat AM..we DID use that "PAVED" road, because there were no signs or barriers up to tell us different...it is simply the 1st "lift" (layer) of pavement...we got to the unfinished bridge (daylight) and were able to get off to the graded haul road

On our return on Wed AM..there WERE big rocks placed to divert you off the road and onto the haul road..

.as we passed the bridge under construction...we saw why...a late model white Dodge Dakota had apparently NOT seen the construction and went flying off the edge..mutliple air bag deployment, shattered windshield on the passenger side, extensive front sheet metal and suspension damage and crinkled bed

They are making good progress and were moving lots of dirt...the road from the end of the "open" pavement to Rancho Grande is very good as is the hill climb over and into the Papa Fernandez checkpoint (except for a small area of curve near the top) Total time from the San Felipe malecon to Papa's checkpoint about 2.5 hrs...

Mike

Pics soon

Sounds as if nothing more has been opened since I was on it last July, where we left the pavement 1.4 miles north of Okie's Landing:

The newest paved additions to Hwy. 5 are well engineered, wide and are designed and signed for high speed. However, frequent rock slides onto pavement require caution.

0.0 / Km. 74+ Puertecitos Road

5.0 / Km. 83 Bahia Cristina

6.1 / Km. 84.5 La Costilla

7.2 mine road

16.4 El Huerfanito Road

18.9 Bridge at previous end of pavement (July 2010)

20.1 / Km. 311 Change of Km. markers, distance from Mexicali

23.6 / Km. 317

24.1 / Km. 318 END OF PAVED DRIVE, detour onto older road, regraded smooth. Pavement ends just ahead on new roadbed.

25.5 Okie Landing site.

32.0 END OF NEW ROAD CONSTRUCTION and end of smooth dirt detour on older road.

32.4 Campo Delfines Road

35.6 Las Encantadas Road

37.7 Punta Bufeo Road

42.4 Papa Fernandez' Road, roadbed south of here is better/ faster.

43.6 Miltary Checkpoint

45.0 GONZAGA BAY PEMEX/ ALFONSINA'S ROAD/ RANCHO GRANDE MARKET (Pemex closed from 2-4 pm for siesta)
