Doug Means' dad, Rod Means

Just returned from the weekend of Las Vegas NASCAR. I spent the weekend with my old racing partner, Jack McCoy, the winningest all time Winston West driver. I asked Jack if he remembered a SoCal guy named Means.... and the stories began to flow.

Seems like Rod was, according to Jack, the first guy on the Coast to start messing with mixing up gas for better race results. Eventually Trick Racing Gas was formed. Jack was one of the major distributors for the "Means created" go-fast gas.

Jack and Rod put on a race car swap meet at the Turlock Fairgrounds, which turned out to be a real success.
Rod owned race cars that were campaigned by a lot of pretty famous names in the stock car memory book.
All in all it was fun to validate some of the stuff that I had heard via Doug.

Jack is clearly one of the most respected racers ever in the West and he validated Rod Means as another first class stock car legend.

Nice going Doug, always nice to know our parents turned out o.k.

Baja Arriba!!

Last Summer, when I was 'lost mission hunting' at Rancho La Bocana, there was a Jeep truck there, with a big TRICK Racing Fuel sticker on it! I told Doug about it when we got back... I will try and post the photo I took of it, later...

After perusing Google Earth I couldn't see any roads going very far up the San Pedro Valle----in fact it looks like there's a fairly large rock outcropping not too far up the canyon which would limit it to missionaries and burros only! Still, looking forward to exploring this area some more---looks like some nice Blue Palm Valleys on the western drainages.

On my 5th search for the lost mission of Santa Maria Magdalena, Pete (GeoRock's esposo) came along in the Hummer (I was in my Tacoma) and we explored up Arroyo La Palma... which crosses the old San Francisquito road just before it joins the new road (south of Bahia San Rafael/ Pancho's place). This was in December, 2003.

I thought an arroyo named La Palma was a good clue! Palms grow in or near water, and missions (and Indians) are located at good water sources.

We drove up the sandy arroyo until boulders stopped us, then spent a couple hours more hiking... no palms! Pete did find a clam shell, however! Indians were here...

Nonetheless, looks like another beautiful Baja sand wash!

Couldn't seem to get the image into BajaNomads but here is a link to a pic of a west drainage on the other side of Valle San Pedro---very healthy palms!

Looking at this Camino Real page, I see that several of the links fail to open because the period at the end of the link was not spaced away from the link. Here's an example from the opening post above:

The Gulfo Camino was partly traveled by Arthur North, around 1905. It branches from the Paraiso route near CALMALLI VIEJO, pburros CERRO EL VALLE going north-northeast to VALLE LA BOCANA. Along the way was an important tinaja (water hole) called Santa Maria. We visited Tinaja Santa Maria in 2001 and a year and a half later: http://vivabaja.com/1202/page2.html.

Remove the period after html and the link then works: http://vivabaja.com/1202/page2.html

Once Nomad has been fixed, I will edit this... because of Spanish letters in the post, if I edit it before Doug fixes Nomad, it will not post.
