I'd add a guy on MX 19 at Ocampo road in Todos Santos. Don't know his name but his shop is on the left side of the 19 as you head north, just before
the intersection of 19 and Ocampo. He replaced my fuel pump once and was extremely fair with his prices and he was super honest (I had to store my
car there for a week for which he charged nothing). I would go back to that guy in a heartbeat.

Mechanics in Baja? Plenty of 'em. Every town has at least one or two. The bigger the town, the more mechanics to choose from.

This is a handy thread considering I am in need of a mechanic right now  I need
to get a steering box brought down from the states and installed on my '84 Landcruiser HJ60.
I'm in Ensenada. I am pretty sure I could drive a bit to get to a good mechanic if the road isn't too tough.
Asking around and visiting mechanics here hasn't given me much confidence. I'd like to go to someone recommended by a Nomad if possible ...

Thank you! I just arranged to have the part I need shipped to San Diego so I can take the bus up there to retrieve it. That should happen on Wed.

Before traveling the distanced dusty roads of Baja....do run your truck through a good ol spot check for mechanical issues that may need fix'in. I
did. Radiator overflow hose replaced. New complete brake work. New tires. General diagnostic.
Hell....I could had flown to Tulume for this sort of money!
Outside of Mexicali.....squeak.
And then there was more squeak.
Not enough? Lets add grind. Then real grinding!
By the time I got to San Felipe....the brakes were 90% gone. The Sacramento car repair messed up big time. Some how.
Now in Campos Ocotillo....I wondered what hundreds I'll be giving up. I get a "good" recommendation from Gloria, our neighbor. "He is very honest,
speaks English, .....I am very happy with this mechanic"says Gloria. The next morning I follow her in.
Serious issues, and no parts avail. "Come back tomorrow a.m. and I'll have it up and running by 5" says the mechanic.
Back home now and Chuck from the San Felipe Food Bank stops by. A Nomad here that goes by the name of CDB. Offers help in use of a car. Wow. Then
later Lee of the BN name Baja.BBQ comes by. Offers more help. End of the day, Ron swings by and tells be that he'll be driving in behind me to drop
off the truck the next day.....and to pick me up! Ron is BN's akshadow .
Next day is here. Car parts are in. WHOA! I cant get a price on cost repairs from this guy...but what's the hell. All day I am thinking 5oo-8oo
buckaroos. I'll have to call DavidK and ask him if he wants to buy my ownership of Shell Island...to pay for the repairs. Cash David...cash!
4:30 pm Judgment Day. May the Gods have mercy on me.
$200.00!!!!!!!!!!! I thought my hearing aid was whispering false numbers to me! $200.00 And the truck worked perfectly....in fact...better than ever.
I gave him an extra $40.00 to buy dinner out... for him and family.
So what am I saying about all this? If you break down in San Felipe...use this guy:

I've used Ruben for years, he's great! Not so good on the new electronics but old style blacksmith work is his field. Older engines, springs,
transmissions, suspensions, welding, Rubens your man. He'll even look at your inboard engine of your boat. If his gate is closed just park because he
doesn't stray too far, he'll be back soon.

Seconded! I just spent the afternoon hanging around his shop after I couldn't figure out why my starter solenoid was crapping out. Turns out I had
half a cup of muddy/sludgy/greasy water trapped inside.
Anyhow, he took it apart, cleaned everything up, put it back together and a took care of a few other small things for ~$50. He's an old school
mechanical wizard, plenty of good stories and he's got a lot of cool projects in his shop.

BFS - could you give me a better idea of where this guy is in La Paz? A major cross street reference or which 'colonia' he is in would be helpful.
Can't find Callejon 1E San Antonio y Miraflores on my street map or even on google earth - it sent me to Peru! Thanks!

Sure,
It is Colonia Los Olivos very near the "Alta Tension", so heading south on 5 de Febrero pass immigration and go all the way until it ends at Alta
Tension. Turn right here and go a few blocks to San Antonio. You will see a small sign for the shop on your right that says Taller direccion
hidraulicas. It 1 block in from this point on callejon 1.

I have a wonderful mechanic in Ensenada. I had some really severe problems with my heating coil leaking inside my car and my clutch went at the same
time. If any of you know about a heating coil replacement, they have to disassemble the whole dashboard, it is a labor intensive job. The
replacement heating coil turned out to be defective, and the mechanic fixed it again with absolutely no charge. The parts and labor for both jobs was
a little over $400 American. In the States it would have run me over $1500. He also had the car detailed for no extra charge. Everything this guy
does is top notch and professional. When I get back to Ensenada in a few weeks I will post his picture and contact information.
