It's tough for me to believe that "there is no major damage" in an earthquake in the 7.something catagory.

when we had the 7.2 two years ago in Rosarito they initially said the same thing... then the devastation to Mexicali became apparent as more news
reports came in.

Felt very strong in Mexico City, and the states of Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacan, Oaxaca, Estado de Mexico, and many strong aftershocks.

Perhaps the depth, at eleven miles, is the reason for the surprisingly light damage reports.

I spoke with 2 friends who live in Acapulco; no damage at all, according to them. It was strong but everything seems back to normal. Don't know
about towns closer to the epicenter, though.
Same reports from friends in DF.

The quake was considerably south of Acapulco, more like in the area of Puerto Escondido. The Richter Scale can be very misleading. I much prefer the
Modified Mercalli Scale when judging intensity.

The last report I read was it was centered in Guerrero, approximately 120 miles East of Acapulco.
The SAME boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It's about what you are made of NOT the circumstance.

Mexicali quake of Easter 2010 of the hotel's pool sloshing water out.

The MM scale is useful. It puts earthquake effects into descriptions that folks can relate to:
MMI value Summary description used on maps Description of shaking severity Full description shortened from Elementary Seismology
[MMI I] I Not mapped Not mapped Not felt.
[MMI II] II Not mapped Not mapped Felt by people sitting or on upper floors of buildings.
[MMI III] III Not mapped Not mapped Felt by almost all indoors. Hanging objects swing. Vibration like passing of light trucks. May not be
recognized as an earthquake.
[MMI IV] IV Not mapped Not mapped Vibration felt like passing of heavy trucks. Stopped cars rock. Hanging objects swing. Windows, dishes, doors
rattle. Glasses clink. In the upper range of IV, wooden walls and frames creak.
[MMI V] V Light Pictures move Felt outdoors. Sleepers wakened. Liquids disturbed, some spilled. Small unstable objects displaced or upset. Doors
swing. Pictures move. Pendulum clocks stop.
