Overnight camping around Puerto Penasco, Son.?

I'm wondering if anyone has overnighted in the Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) area of northern Sonora?

Ideally, I'm looking for a near-or-on-the-beachfront camping area (preferably boondocking) that isnt too far off the main paved roads along there. I'd just be staying one night on my way over to Baja. Trying to break up the drive. San Carlos to San Felipe is too far for the wife.

An improved camping area would also be acceptable.

Most of the beaches in that area have condos on the shore...some stuff south of Rocky Point, but wouldnt save much driving...In Rocky Point RV park on the beach...Playa Bonita ..I think...the new road between Rocky Point and El Golfo...MIGHT have something...El Golfo definitely does...

Just after you arrive into town...

after the rail road tracks, make a right, then another right.
You'll drive by some hotels then you'll reach an very improved campground with easy beach access. You can walk to town from there.
I don't remember the name, but the Hobie Class Association hold two regattas a year there.
There is also another one at the edge of the peninsula before you get into town that is operated by Club Med

Udo, is the first one a big paved area with RV spaces laid out in conventional style?

I think I see it on Google Earth, based on your directions.

And which peninsula are you talking about? The one that forms the outer arm of the marina or the one that is maybe a km NW of town proper?

That is correct, Hook!

The peninsula I an talking about is the one NW of town, which is actually about 8 miles before you get downtown.

BTW, if you have never been to Peņasco, they are well known for their oysters. Just drive south of town on the main road. When you see the sand dunes, make a right.
There are several oyster farms there where they pluck them out of the water, shuck them, lime them and serve beers of your choice.
Dozen oysters and two beers were $5.00 U.S. but it's been about 6 years since I've been there.

Rocky Point is not much of a camping place anymore. Most camp grounds got bought up by the condo/hotel folks. Most of what is left rents to the longer term snow birds.

A camping area called La Joya, just on the north side of town, has been recommended. Maybe that is the place you were thinking of, Udo?

Any other comments on it from persons having been there in, say, the last three years?
