Vintage Baja 1000 -SCORE- pictures
Please add any old/vintage Baja racing pictures and stories. I'm sure we have a couple of old racers here at BN.
My very first race was the Baja 1000 in 1981 (I think). This picture was taken just outside of Ensenada on our way to San Felipe. That year was a loop
back to Ensenada. One of my vivid memories of that race was being stuck behind a Class 6 1970ish blue Mustang GT, That car was fast on the flat
straightaway's with it's V-8 power but it sure sucked thru the bumps. We would no sooner pass him and we would hit another fast track and he would
dust us making the visibilty next to zero. I think we swapped position 5 times untill we reached our first pit. BTW my truck was 1974 Ford
Courier/mazda with a 1800cc 4cylinder w/dual webers and B&M automatic, we were sponsored by Temecula valley pipe/Rainbird and Bridgestone tires. I
think we had a whopping 7" of wheel travel back then (front).

Very Cool! A truck sponsored by Irrigation!
I was a co-driver in a Class 6 for the '79 Baja 1000. Cool to get a street car fixed to race off road... like the Edsel we recently saw photos of in
the Norra event.

Off Road Racing photos
Most of ours are packed away probably in the garage but here are three from an earlier time.
First two from the Riverside Raceway Score races, the third from somewhere in Baja.
What was commonly called the "Land Rush" start
Our daughter, finally 16 years old and can "work" the race (she's now 41 - dare I say that?)
Somewhere in Baja - truck driven by Slick Racin Gardner, supposedly his legal name

Nice pics John!!
Here are a couple more from Riverside around 1980, a 66 Chevelle maybe? crazy stuff was raced back then
For some reason I think the Blue car had something to do with Mickey Thompson. Anyone remember it?

1981..
Mark Staul won class 1 driving solo..
Mark McMillan driving a class 2 buggy was the 4-whl overall winner.. This was taken near Rcho San Martin
Class 6 was won by Stan Gilbert in the 66' Chevy..

Yah, Mickey Thompson tried a variety of high powered race cars for off road! Twice he broke down in front of where I was pitting or watching.
Here are a few of my older Baja race pics:
1973 BAJA 1000 (BSC)... Parnelli Jones warming up BIG OLY the day before the race:
1975 BAJA INTERNACIONAL (SCORE)... Mickey and Danny Thompson in a Chevy LUV truck, with a 454 V-8 in the bed, using and Olds front wheel drive ON THE
REAR.
1975 BAJA 300 (BRA)... Ivan Stewart winning overall in one of his early race buggies...
1975 BAJA 1000 (SCORE)... Parnelli Jones in his new Chevy Blazer 'funny car'...
