Calibrating an old torque wrench to be used in Baja
I have ALMOST everything needed to do the impeller replacement on my 115hp Merc except a torque
wrench. In digging through my long-passed father's tool box I came across an old spring-type wrench that was sitting in the bottom of the tool box
for at least 20 years. I remember using it in the early 60's whenver we would do the annual valve job on the in-line-six 230c.i. Chevy.
Anyway, I need to torque the lower unit bolts to 50 foot-pounds and am wondering if there is a shade-tree way of making sure this wrench is close.
Here's my idea culled from my memory of long-ago college physics:
1. Set the inch-pound dial to 600 (600/12=50).
2. Run a bolt into the 12X12 post holding up the 2nd floor over the garage.
3. Secure the top of the scale to the beam over said post.
4. Using appropriate socket, attach ratched end of wrench to bolt.
5. Attach hook end of scale to wrench handle at exaclty 12" from center of 3/8" drive.
6. Apply downward force until wrench clicks - noting weight on scale.
7. Keep adjusting dial in step #1 above until the wrench clicks at 50# on scale. Note that setting.
8. Walla - wrench is callibrated at the 50lb mark????
9. Use coupon in today's paper from the Disposable Tool Co for a 3/8" drive tourque wrench for $9.99 plus tax.

Huh?? I'm meaning the five bolts that hold the lower end (the part that holds the prop, water pump and drive shaft) to the bottom of the mid section.
These are easily accessable.

Hola, you need a 9/16 or 5/8 wrench !! and tighten the middle nuts first.. and you DO KNOW about the hidden bolt ???

Dude.....it's 9:00am on a Sunday. Some of us have the decency to wait until after Sunday Supper. Note to those of you from Kansas - I know that
'supper' is the evening meal and that 'dinner' is the noon meal but on Sunday, the main meal is after church and is rightly referred to as supper.
And of course, there are only two choices: roast chicken or roast beef. Side of mashed potatoes with gravy made from the pan drippings. Greens of
some sort. Cobbler or pie, whatever mom felt like on Saturday when the baking was done for the following week.
Some of you young'uns haven't a clue just how good food can taste.....

captkw is right, there are 6 bolts holding the lower unit to the mid section. The hidden one has frustrated a lot of shade tree mechanics
I'd like to have a dollar for every busted case I've seen caused by this bolt.: 
On second thought, I don't need the dollar, considering all the money I made replacing the broken cases.
Oh, and the location of this bolt is........... under the skeg!!
