Abreojos, La Bocana, Bahia Asuncion.....

Gonna be doing this stretch soon. Anyone have anything to add, to see, to do, must do's?

All comments welcome, including the flies suck at Abreojos.

Bring it on.

Exploring some of the beachbreaks (I think you are a surfer?) on the coast route between La Bocana and Asuncion. I've always wanted to do that but never have yet.

Swell coming?! And you may need wetsuits. Beautiful coastline but no Modeloramas in between. Fishing pole. Arriba Baja. Tio

You may as well hit Tortugas and Eugenia for good measure.

My wife is gonna love those flies. She's a trooper to say the least but her one foe is flies.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely gonna explore some beach breaks to the north.

What I'm getting stoked on is Surfline's updated forecast last night:

"There is a separate storm now developing off the coast of Chile. This low will be pushing out a steep angled SSE (180-155) swell for around the same time as the above swell, over the 6th-9th, and has good potential for fun size surf at exposures."

Steep angle but we shall see.

we always take a spur road between San Hipolito & Pta.Prieta that hugs the shore...if you are coming from the south, hang a left leaving Hipolito to take you to the lighthouse where you can prolly catch a halibut and surf! good camp spot too...there are some cool spots and shells and rocks and beach stuff along here....stop in and say Hola to Juan's sister Tita and her husband Bimbo in Hipolito...they live right next door to where the pangas get launched...ask anyone...oh yeah and dont forget to bring a couple dozen oysters from La Bocana cooperativa!!!

Speaking of flies.....on our last trip we took down a fly trap which worked out great! It was the kind that you put water in and it really stinks. Hang it a little ways away from your camp (down wind) if possible, and watch the flies collect! By the time we left, that thing was plugged with flies (hundreds)! I really think it helped keep them concentrated away from our place. Good luck!

also keep the empty beer cans and bottles sealed in the trash bag, flies love the glycerol in beer!

so, here are some of my suggestions:

stop by campo rene which is between highway 1 and abreojos. have a meal there and enjoy birdwatching and the exquisite view. make friends with george and mary who have a motorhome parked for the summer ...very good friends of ours. not sure if there is surfing ?? but there is camping.

in abreojos, stop by Chelo's and see if she and her husband are there - her hotel is a surfer stop. It is on the right soon after you enter abreojos.

once here in la bocana, save some cash for a dinner with Joaquin - it is a meal you will never forget and he is someone worth meeting ! we have to make a reservation - he is not open to the public.

plan to be in asuncion on a sat or a sunday so you can get their famous shrimp tacos

and if you have time, after asuncion, go to puerto nuevo - remember that you have to take all your food and beverages since there are No stores there at all.

most of all - HAVE FUN !

Come visit La Bocana

And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.

Pacifico, Thanks for the fly trap advice. Not sure I've ever heard of a water trap, but you know my wife is Googling that!! In fact, she sent me a link while I was at work today. Thanks bro.

Blanca,

Excellent advice. I'm taking notes in my Baja Almanac page 14 on the side of the page. Puerto Nuevo sounds cool.

I've now heard from 2 people about dinner with Joaquin. I'm interested. I'll see where were at with my wife and make sure to stash some extra cash just in case. Although it sounds like reservations are needed. Maybe I'll send a messenger ahead of me?? =)

I assume you are driving something that can drive on the 40 side of the 4 or 40 rule. That stretch from La Bocana to Bahia Asuncion has the longest straightest, most boring and had the most widely spaced washboards I ever spent two days covering at less than 10 MPH. Don't miss the scenic Mt. Viet Nam! Otherwise the most memorable scenery is the power lines.

I'm good.....have a Tundra airing down and look forward to washboard - or not, but I can deal with it. Can't imagine it's worse than driving into Scorpion Bay on the North Road. I like to go about 45 if the road allows me to do so. Having said that, I'll be taking it easy to not spill my Tecate.

We did that trip 2 years ago. We found that if you can drive on the salt flats the ride is much nicer. The road does have a lot of wash board.

There are traffic marks on the salt flats and I would not get off of those as it can get very soft very fast.

If you use the salt flats, be sure and get your vehicle cleaned well afterwards.

We did the northern piece on a motor cycle and ended up hitting mud that was covered by about an 1/8 inch of dry salt. We went down and lost some skin.
