I saw bugman's the day he caught it, had to go out and get my own but the largest I could manage was 5#. Still a lot of good meat. Last year I
helped a boatmate land one at 26# so there are still a few out there...

Halibut are a frequently targeted fish in the winter months in BoLA - Crocodiles seem to be the bait of choice. Shore fishing is the way to get it
done.

I know it's hard to do but one should remember that for this species of halibut, 22 inches has allowed it a chance at spawning. This assumes this is
an isolated set of the California halibut, which is the general consensus. Certainly, there is no size limit in Mexico, of course.
Female California halibut grow faster
than male California halibut.
A 22 in. female fish is about 5 years old and a
22 in. male is about 7 years old.
50 percent of male California halibut
can reproduce at 9 in. or 2 years.
50 percent of female California halibut
can reproduce at 18.5 in. or 4 years.

Is there anyway to differentiate between male & female(alive) ?
This could be useful for my "hook, release, & the occasional keep" style of fishing...

Those are some nice looking LA Bay halls! Got to get into those one of these days. Going to be trying some west coast spots in late May; hope I can
get a couple like you all have done.
