Our visit to Bahia de los Angeles

Dropping into Bahia

Cruising by the artsy sails at the roundabout. Why does a pueblo of 1,000 residents need a roundabout? Oh I forgot, it's Mexico.

Thanks to our good friends, we had fantastic accomodations.

Late afternoon at the beach in front of the casa.

American oystercatchers welcome us.

Buenas Dias. It's easy to get up when it's this beautiful.

Let's go cruise the town.

Go visit the Vermilion Sea Field Station and whale skeleton.

Talk shop with Rueben Ocana and his crew.

Head into town with a stop at the museo. It's been decades of dedication for Carolina and she truly has created a gem. Saludos Carolina.

The famous Casa Diaz. I miss the planes tied up out front and outdoor movies of Abbott & Castello on Saturday night. A lot more comes to mind. What are your favorite memories of this place?

And then who do I see? My old friend Pepe Smith. I said hello, and he replied 'Wiley, it's been a long time and you lookin kinda old'. Gracias Pepe.

Enough for this post.............stay tuned.

We really liked that museum as well. Everything's up close and personal. We were allowed to touch some of the specimens.

NICE photos of BOLA, wiles.

We usually head there about once every two years. I see nothing is changed...including the fantastic sunrises!!

Loving your report. Can't wait for more. You got hooked up at Barbara's old place. Nice.

That Pepe! I can hear him now, "...and you lookin kinda old." He is classic. "Paulina, why you look so fat?" (because I am fat Pepe) Then it's, "Paulina, you not fat. You too skinny. Why you so skinny?" He calls it like it is. Maybe after you've known someone for so long, and you call them your brother, they feel like they can be honest. I hope you told Pepe that he was lookin kinda old too!

Now when they tell me that my back side resembles "Petetio", there's nothing I can do about that. It is what it is. At least that sounds better than "plywood butt".

Love those guys.

Actually there is. But it's not worth the trouble.

I read somewhere that Penelope Cruz had some 'beefin up' to do for a film.

Artsy sails at the turnaround and the paved road is the (only) legacy of the "escalera nautica" project. The project was subsequently cancelled. Last time I've been there, it was still a town with no running water, no cell phones, and mainstream electricity in some homes only. Scenery is nice, yes.

Alm,
So maybe you need an update:?:

When was the last time you were there?

Those pics have encouraged me to spend more time searching out what the town has to offer beyond Victoria's margs

Don't know,

Don't really need either.

You're right about the 'new' road - gracias, escalera.

No cell tower yet, not sure about running water in most homes, but we love it just as it is...

Ditto. Sluggish and costly satellite internet (where it is installed), I might add. The best thing about this town is that it is small and remote.

Yeah, you're right. Maybe they should have left the road alone.

They wouldn't have bothered with a paved road for a town of 500 (back then), if it wasn't for Escalera project. Luckily, the project never happened.

The paved road into town was planned with the completion of Hwy. 1 in 1973. Construction of the graded road into town from the parador of Punta Prieta was completed in 1974 (I drove on it) and paving was underway on my next trip in 1976... although only a few miles were paved that summer. In 1985, the road had been all paved, but so thin it was already full of chuck holes. It was repaved with turnouts for the Escalera Nautica around 2005.

EDIT: I got inspired to scan my old AAA maps (1965-1996) on the L.A. Bay area... see them here (in the Historic Interests forum): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=67039
