El Rosario & Sidetrips 11/04 (Part 6, Pitayas)
Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004: Antonio was still working on the water pressure system until late in the morning when we finally pulled out.
Going through San Quintin, where many vendors sell fruit, Antonio spotted tables full of Pitayas! The esteemed fruit so craved by the Baja Indians
that they would disappear during the fall when the fruit was ripe.
The following photos tell the story better than I, but I will say that they are extremely pleasant to eat, very juicy, totally edible (including the
tiny seeds which were the same size as strawberry seeds), and easy to peel. The thorn clusters are removed with the scraping of a knife.
We arrived back in Tijuana about 4:30, I said my thank yous and good byes to Antonio, then headed to Otay Border crossing... Sunday 5pm to 6:30pm in
line, then waved right in after the two short questions: Citizenship and What are you bring from Mexico.

Ray and Mike, I appreciate the reply, thank you!
Bedman also emailed me lightened versions of some of the photos. Let me play with my photoshop and see what I can do. Many were taken in the late
afternoon or under clouds. The pictures I posted was how I saw the places when I was there (darker, etc.).

David , really good posts as usual. Every time I drive south from Rosario and through the begining of the cirio range I think it would be great to
explore the canyons , mesas and arroyos to the south of the main road. Also , here's a good foto of a pitaya en vivo. As a zymurgist I've just got to
work on a batch of pitaya wine some day . I want to use the real deal from baja though, not the ones seen in back yards in socal.

Good photo of Pitaya Agria... I do think we were eating Pitaya Dulce, however. The fruit looks almost identicle...
hmmm, Boon's Farm Pitaya Wine... sort of has a nice ring to it!
