Mission Book: Lecture/ PowerPoint Presentation in Rosarito June 7, 2014
The United Society of Baja California has invited Max Kurillo and myself to give a lecture and slide show (Powerpoint) presentation on the Old
Missions of Baja & Alta California.
The lecture is Saturday Morning at the Rosarito Beach Hotel, June 7, 10 am.
When more details become available, I will post them here. This is an opportunity for folks in northwestern Baja California with an interest in the
missions and how they really were founded in California, from Loreto and outwards in all directions.
I just learned that this event was open to anyone, not just members of U.S.B.C.
Book Signing to follow lecture and Q & A time.

The book and the lecture is about the founding of the 48 missions in Old (Baja) and New (Alta) California from 1697 to 1834.
The mission names and dates of founding are in the book web page: http://oldmissions.com
The first 18 missions were founded on the peninsula over a 72 year period. The next 30 missions were founded both on the peninsula and in the land
north of the peninsula, during the years 1769-1834.
The peninsula was called California first, then Old California, and finally Lower California. In Spanish: Antigua California and Baja California.
The land north of the peninsula was called New California first, then Upper California. In Spanish: Nueva California and Alta California.
The final two missions were founded after Mexico was independent of Spain (Sonoma in 1823 and Guadalupe in 1834) by missionaries who were allowed to
continue their efforts, as California was considered not yet civilized.

David, I have a friend from Rosarito, that wanted me to pass on a message to you:
"David, in case Ken Bell forgets to tell you, there will be a full breakfast on the house for you and the other speaker, so come hungry."
Oh they also wanted me to ask you, if you will accept checks for your books?

Thank you Joe. I got the email from Ken about breakfast. That is very nice to feed us! I will ask Max about the checks, I presume if they from U.S.
banks, it would not be a problem. Max takes care of the money end.

I will report on the border crossings too. I think we will go south through the new Tijuana border to 1-D and come north on the Corredor 2000 to
Otay... but that may change?!

Hi guys,
I just got home... visited with our son and grandson in San Diego (Baja Angel was already there) after leaving Max's home in El Cajon.
Going south at 8-9 this morning was a breeze! 805 to Tijuana's new border was fast and easy... well signed on to Rosarito or Ensenada.... faster than
before with that big smooth U-Turn from south to north, to the border fence road, after entering Mexico. Max drove south and I drove back.
We arrived at the Rosarito Beach Hotel just after 9 and found the room where this group (USBC) has its meetings (Casa Blanca) between the swimming
pool and the Pacific Ocean.
I had one Nomad 'lurker' introduce herself to me and there were 51 other members or guests at today's function. Max and I did our lecture on the 48
California missions and it seemed to be well received. We signed many books before heading home.
It was a really beautiful day in Baja, and I was tempted to continue driving south to watch the Baja 500 or at least revisit some missions! I picked
up a bottle of Vanilla for Baja Angel... and we hopped on the Corredor 2000 for a fast and easy drive back north to the Otay Border... to give it a
new chance.
What a mess... in the middle of the day (1:23 pm) was a huge line with all lanes full and all border gates open, but still we moved so slowly for 1/2
mile to the USA, it took just over 2 hours to get across. I wish we drove to Tecate!
Baja quick trips would be so much fun and we would do them often, but this wait to get back across the border really takes the fun out of such an
idea.
