Shootout in Los Barriles?
I was reading on another site there was a shootout and 3 people were killed. Anyone have any info on this?

It is all over the news, here are some links to Colectivo Pericu. Sept. 1st 10:30 at night in the Colonia Laguna there were gunshots, a woman
screaming, 3 dead...one of them a woman. Nasty stuff...nobody in custody. I was surprised nobody from Los Barilles reported it here.

Sad but true, husband and wife killed at bar by bus stop and one at bridge north of town. drug related.

drug dealers in los barilles???? Didn't know that sort of buisness existed in that town. Is it a cartel thing or just a dispute between clients and
suppliers? Has this happened before??? just wondering how safe it is there.

I have been very surprised and dismayed at the number of shoot outs in La Paz this past few months...mostly drug related executions but wow...one
every few days according to Colectivo Pericu news.

1. Drug use? Yes. The usual with a rise in population. Theft seems to be on the rise.
2. Drug disputes? Yes. Some serious, but relatively infrequent.
3. Cartel presence? Yes, a mid-level cartel leader resident was captured by the military during a quiet lunch and sent to jail a few years back.
4. Drug dealers? Yes...usually from out of town and quite present on the beach some evenings.
Safe? Yes, generally, but avoid the above to decrease risk. It's a good place with a lot of great things going on.
I'm only there in the winter.
When the way comes to an end, then change. Having changed, you pass through.

unfortunately, it exists in every town and fish camp. drugs seems to have permeated all the rural areas.

Meth ("crystal") is in many small Baja towns and villages, as well as big towns like LOS BARRILES. There are rehab clinics all over Baja. Sad.

Should you then avoid the beaches in the evenings, that would be unfourtunate, if so which ones? Cannot the local police and maybe the new branch of
police do more to keep em out?

No...no need to worry, or avoid beaches. Really. Drugs are ubiquitous across the continent. Ground zero for the drug industry is 150 miles to the
east. The local situation is similar to Resort Town, Anywhere, North America. People bring their appetites with them and mostly mind their own
business. I think the concern lately has been for home break-ins and theft which goes hand-in-hand with drug problems.
The local police are prevention oriented, the Federales take care of some things and the military shows up for others. The law can't go it alone. One
of the really good things are all the organizations in Los Barriles who are helping to build strong communities. Changing a drug problem starts with
people caring about the community and the people who live there.
When the way comes to an end, then change. Having changed, you pass through.

What are these organizations? What are they doing to help? Is there drug education? Are they patrolling and identifying dealers. Do they offer rehab
for the addicts? Meth is a nasty drug to get hooked on. Hope they do something useful.

Actually, Los Barrillians live there year round. It's the hordes of gringos that bail out in the summer.
It's sad how any event like this can cause potential tourists to avoid what is in reality a very safe area. The fact is, your chances of being the
victim of violent crime in Los Barriles are extremely low.
If only people were as concerned about the ever declining sport fishery in BCS.

You can basically replace "BCS" with any sport fishing location in the world. Nowhere are things getting better. There are little improvements here
and there, but we just need to enjoy what little is left and try to promote and practice sustainable fishing. Ted Danson's book "Oceana" predicts a
nearly lifeless ocean by 2090 - 2100. If the acidity of the ocean keeps increasing, which it clearly will via CO2, and the Ph levels fall to the low
to mid 7s (8.4 is normal and many areas are seeing high 7s currently), then it's game over. Sorry to go off topic. I hope it's a long time before we
hear of anything like this again on the East Cape (re: shootings).
Also, agreed about USA's appetite for drugs. Decriminalize them and all the cartel hell and other violent crime goes away. Just look at Portugal.

Can anyone share the process they've had to go through to obtain a permit to have a handgun in your home? I've read it's possible as long as the
weapon is kept in the home and is solely intended for protection. What's the deal with having guns for hunting (e.g. rifles for deer, etc and
shotguns for birds?) Mexican gun laws confuse me.
