Release: Labor Maquiladora Tour

http://www.activistsandiego.org/wwwboard/viewtopic.php?t=927...

The Labor Council Cross Border Education Committee, the San Diego Maquiladora Workers' Solidarity Network and the Tijuana Maquiladora Workers' Network invite union activists to a tour of labor sites and struggles in the maquiladora zone. This is an opportunity to see and hear first hand the conditions and stories of these exploited global workers: the consequences of NAFTA, FTAA & CAFTA.

Join your union sisters and brothers on this tour!

Saturday, JANUARY 15th, 2005

9:00am to 3:00pm

Cost: $35 per participant to cover the bus, lunch, and a donation to Tijuana worker organizations. Tickets will be available by contacting Herb Shore: hshore@cox.net

The tour will begin at the trolley end in San Ysidro.

Schedule

9:00 am: Meet at the San Ysidro Trolley Station. We will walk together, cross the border gate and travel to our locations in Tijuana using chartered buses for transportation.

10:00-10:30 am: Cittac's office (Centro de Informacion para Trabajadores y Trabajadoras; Workers' Information Center). We will meet Tijuana activists and workers.

11:00-11:30 am: Visit to Otay Industrial Park, especially Metales y Derivados, perhaps the worst industrial polluting sites in Tijuana (lead, cadmium, acids and other substances used to recycle car batteries).

11:45 am- 2:30 pm: Colectivo Chilpancingo office. Presentation of struggle and organization experiences by Tijuana activists and workers: Cittac
(Workers' Information Center), Colectivo Chilpancingo for Environmental Justice, Colectivo Feminista Binacional, Womens' Rights Advocates, Poblado Maclovio Rojas, Tijuana Maquiladora Workers Network

1:00-1:45 pm: Lunch

2:30 pm: Return to San Ysidro border line

Sounds like a waste of 35 bolas to me.

At least they're honest - there's not even the pretense of seeking the truth in this report.

What if you're not a union activist - are you still welcomed to take the tour?

Will some of the "stories" be about families that have been delivered from a miserable deadend poverty and own their own home thanks to the maquiladora industry?

Anyone that thinks pollution is worse after (or because of) NAFTA doen't really have much of a grasp on the reality.
