9th Annual BajaNomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive

One more time!!! Now on the 9th edition. This year we are starting early in order to avoid all those last minute gifts that arrive and the hassles of smuggling all those toys, specially since we don't have a car at this time (the transmission died on the van and I don't know when I'll be able to fix it anytime soon).
The Toy Drive will be on January 11th, that gives us about 3 months to get all the donations in and hopefully early. We're getting really close to a decade of bringing toys to the less fortunate kids of Baja California that, if not for your help, would not be receiving gifts for Christmas or Dia de Reyes.

Here are links to the past toy drives:

8th Toy Drive, http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=70559#pid8766...

Last years event was held south of Tecate in an isolated community called Colonia Hindu at Cerro Azul. I don't have a location or a number of kids for this coming event yet but I will be updating information constantly. Once again I invite you all to join us as we deliver toys to the children of Baja California. We always make it a very fun and memorable day.

Same as in past years, our good friends at BajaBound Insurance Services / Toy Store are allowing us to use their offices as a drop off location for all donations.
Their information is:
Toy Drive c/o Baja Bound Insurance Services, Inc.
750 11th Avenue #101
San Diego, CA 92101
Phone (619) 702-4292

Also if you are in the Rosarito area and want to donate, the drop of location there is Cindy's Mexican Insurance, they are conveniently located on the main Blvd, at the Rosarito Beach Hotel Shopping Center
Blvd Benito Juarez #31, Suite 9
Phone (661) 612-2641

If you would like to donate toys or food but do not know what to get or can not send it, there is a Paypal account, fernando@vivabajacalifornia.com

We have a head start for this event because of our secret santa he sent a shipment of 100 soccer balls last minute for last years event and we could only smuggle a few in time for last years toy drive so this is very good.

Thank you so so much in advance for making the 9th Annual Dia de Reyes toy drive possible.

Saludos y gracias,

Fernando Garcia y familia

Sorry to hear about the transmission Fernando. Hope you and the kids are doing well. I always look forward to this event and seeing everyone, and great that we get an early start.

I hope many Nomads join us this year to deliver the toys and bikes, it has always been a very positive experience, the kids are thrilled. Easy to park on the US side, and the bus takes us right to the Tijuana bus terminal where we all meet and depart from. Last year my daughter Sara came from Colorado to join us. We had some great street tacos in Tijuana before we departed for the Orphanage.

To save some time, you can order online and have your items shipped directly to Baja Bound Insurance.

Thanks to everyone!

Hi all Nomads;
We need toys, dolls, toy trains and trucks, all kinds of sport balls, bicycles, stuffed animals, hot wheels ......
The main reason for starting the request for donations is to start receiving toys early, remember, we have to smuggle them across the border. We already know that there is no way to cross them all at one time. It probably could be done but this would entail most likely to involve some special interest group or politician that would profit from the giving of the toys for their own personal gain, be it image or whatever and this is not what the Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive is about.
There is a Paypal account available but at this point it's not about that. What cash / Paypal donations have done in the past is help us pay for the food, transportation and other factors that always happen but, that is usually close to the date of the event. Like buying more gift wrap, buying toys we did not get, paying for food for the kids and staff, diesel, drivers an so many other things that always happen.
To answer the question, the PayPal acct is: fernando@vivabajacalifornia.com
To greatly help us at this time is by sending or dropping off your toy donations to either BajaBound or Cindy's.
I must confess, after doing this for nine consecutive years, it is of great satisfaction to my family and myself every year, at the end of the event, when everyone has gone home, when all gifts have been given away, when all is quiet and we're back home, that we have at least a dozen tamales left over for our breakfast.
Saludos, gracias and please start sending those toys,
Fernando Garcia y familia

thanks Woody .. I think its good to have it separately listed for those of us who don't have / don't take the time to read Ferna's entire post.

Ferna - we sent you $ this year early so you can put it to use where/when you deem needed. Your email confused me a little - if you don't want to spend it too early, then leave it in paypal and withdraw when you need it ..

Proud to be a contributor to your cause. Keep up the good/hard work! Lori

The date of the toy drive is still January 11th and as of this time we have 130 confirmed children. Also as of today we have received 0 (zero) toys, I guess starting early doesn't help, oh well, lets start again now.
Blanca sent some toys but we are yet to pick them up at the address she gave me, this year without a car it gets more complicated but we'll figure it out. What we request is that you send toys to Bajabound in San Diego and that makes it a lot easier for us since it's centrally located.
We have received 2 paypal donations, one for 23 dollars and another for 100 but that is all we have.
We need a lot of help, please, start sending toys, please.
Also, if some of you can help by bringing toys down for us from Bajabound to Tijuana, we would greatly appreciate it, in past years Jen Hill has helped us a lot with that but we would like for more of you to be involved. There are only 33 days left and we need to get a lot of toys, not counting the transportation and food for the event.
It's our 9th year, one more and it will be a full decade of bringing Baja Nomad toys to some of the most needy children.
We would love to have more children receiving toys, maybe put a cap of 400 on it but were we stand right now we aren't even a the 1 dollar per child mark.
I know that there have been a number of requests for donations, from making a documentary to ambulance services. We're not asking for much, maybe just a Barbie doll or a toy truck for each child and we don't ask all year, just one time a year.
Lets do it!!!
Gracias
Fernando Garcia y familia

C'mon Folks,

if you enjoy this site, and all of the information you get from it a $10 donation the Toy Drive doesn't seem like too much to ask!

although this isn't a pressure tactic, just think how much some kid you will never meet might be impressed by your generosity!

in the past Toy-R-Us had a gift card that the info could be U2U'd to Ferna and he could buy toys in TJ so that was another painless option. I'm not sure if that is still an option?
