Fishing ban in northern sea of cortez
Was in el golfo de Santa Clara (sonora) over the weekend. Word in town is that the federal government is shutting down ALL fishing in upper sea of
cortez starting 12/1/2014.
Anybody able to confirm this? is this the Mexican rumor mill?

Shutting down gill netting would be a great start...but I just can't see it happening. Shrimping after all is fishing and I can't imagine they are
going to shut down the fleet.

Was down San Felipe south campos last week and our friends were telling us the Feds are buying out the shrimp permits and banning more areas of
gillnetting. Near shore has already been banned for "commercial" but personal catch is allowed. We fished and first time didn't see any net floats
within couple miles of the beach and 20lb+ Orangemouth Corvina were abundant.

About 6 years ago my friends were bought out of their netting rights and they took the money bought lots and refurbished the casas and rented out
their old casas. Started up small businesses, took on part time jobs, and started tourist sport fishing. They also marked off areas where the
shrimpers could not go and it was amazing how fast the population of Corvina grew in those areas.

Guess we will have to wait and see how this shakes out. Boat owners will be compensated, crew will have to find alternative ways to survive. Wait and
see!

Fingers crossed!!!! Not an expert but I think Corvina go up and down the coast so a ban in one area may not help them as much as the resident fish
but anything anything anything is++hopefully++a step in the right direction.

The price of shrimp at Puerto Penasco was always a lot less than in San Felipe but I guess that will no longer be true.

That sounds good. A corvina looks like a small white seabass right?

Corvina do look a lot like a WSB! But they got two big teeth, which WSB dont have.

Ok. I think I have caught a few smaller ones from the beach. Do they have a downward facing or "sucker" mouth and two big "wiskers".
The fish I am thinking of patrols the beach at the surf break for sand crabs.
Or is that a corbina?

Ok. I think I caught a few corVina in the estuary at Mag Bay. Funny I dont remember teeth. Maybe a different type of CorVina.

From what I understand, they plan on a 90% reduction 700 KM of surface area that can be fished ?? They need to go further, give the ocean a couple
years to recover.

It sounds good. But, as usual, who will enforce it that cant be bought off?
Remember, it's illegal to commercially fish for dorado and billfish. Yet, its available everywhere in commercial establishments; restaurants, fish
markets, etc.

Good for you, using the capital V to be clear on what type of fish, as a corBina is totally different but also great eating surf fish!
