a case of mistaken identity
The fish below, caught near asuncion, is being called a broomtail grouper by the locals and the gringos catching them. It's actually a star-studded
grouper, Hyporthodus niphobles. Asuncion is pretty much the upper range of this species.

Here are some images of the "Star Studded" Grouper off Loreto last year.. The locals call these guys "Baqueta"..and they are great on the grill..
Caught on the bottom, in about 600ft of water..

Locals at Asunción have their own fish names... Learned from Shari that they call the yellowfin croaker a "Boca Dulce"

My "BroomTail Grouper " story......
Twas meny moon's ago, heck decades ago, that I was fishing at the mouth of Topanga Canyon creek. We were in about 30' of water when I get a BIG strike
! I fight that sucker with a nicely bent rod and bring him boatside to be netted. Nice fish about 15 or so Lbs.
Once on board we're trying to figure out what it was? One of my buddy's calls it a BroomTail grouper and we all agree that it must be one ?
After getting into dock and in the process of cleaning the boat, we have our day's catch laid out on a gunny sack on the ground.
About that time a knowledgeable guy says to us " You guy's better hide that fish" why ? "It's a Black Sea Bass. WTF !!!!
Felt bad but I must say that was sum great tasting Black Sea bass.
Since I've given up all hope, I feel much better

We catch that fish out of San Carlos, Sonora. About a week ago, we caught six in the same area when we normally catch a lot of gold spotted cabrilla.
All were about 5 pounds. That was the most we had ever caught in one bottom fishing trip.
Surprised that those would be called broomtail grouper. The broomtail has definite indented serrations in the tail.......like the straws of a broom.
The fish shown does not.

This is a broomtail, caught last year by Juan Cook and John Fitzgerald fishing with Ruben Duran out of Lopez Mateos. Check out the tail. It's hard
to mistake.
