ATV Trip

Hola Nomads. This is my first time posting on Baja Nomads. I've been going to Baja since 1965. I am 77 years old. One of the few areas I haven't seen yet is the Pacific coast between El Rosario and Santa Rosalillita. My brother and I plan on parking my truck and trailer somewhere in El Rosario and off loading our ATV's and following the cost South. We will be tent camping and surf fishing for our dinners. We would appreciate any info from anyone who has made this trip. My almanac shows a couple of places where there is no road along the coast. Is it possible to get thru following the beach? At Santa Rosilillita one of us will stay with the ATV's at the hotel and the other will hitch-hike or catch a bus back North to get the truck and trailer. We plan to cross the boarder the 2nd week of Feb. and spend 10 days before heading back. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. If anyone would like to join a couple of old geezers on such a trip, we would be happy to have you.

There is no coastal road (beach or otherwise) from San Carlos to Puerto Catarina. You will have to go out to Hwy 1 at KM81 then down to KM133 and head out to the coast. At the coast at Puerto Catarina there is a poor road over to Punta Canoas and from there down the coast road is all the way to Santa Rosalillita. We did that last secton last July in trucks. Your big problem is gas. After El Rosario there is no gas until Catavina at KM180/181 and it's from barrels. Hope your ATV has good gas range. You probably need a chase truck or go down and stash some gas.

For the no road section you should review what happened to Mike Younghusband and his burro 'Don Kay' who couldn't get through without a rescue from the Santa Catarina fish camp. Begin there for the coastal parallel run. No fuel for 200 miles from El Rosario to Villa Jesus Maria. Santa Rosalillita may have gas for sale out of cans. Canoas and San Jose fish camps may have emergency gas? We didn't ask when we did the coast run in 2007: http://vivabaja.com/707

Thanks for the info TMW. Still trying to figure this computer stuff out. I'm starting to think maybe our best bet is to start at the southern end & go only as far as gas will take us safely & back. We'll each carry a couple of gallons of spare gas & water. I would think gas could be had at some of the fish camps??? Mucho gracias TMW....Roberto

Thanks for the reply David. Checked out your "viva baja" vidio. This may not be a good time of year to be on the pacific? I also am spoild from spending many years living in San Nicolas. Any suggestions where a couple of old geezers might go to get off the beaten track & have some fun fishing & exploreing? Thanks again...Roberto

If you start in Santa Rosalallita, you can go North to the seven sisters. Not difficult, but scenic. Another good ATV trip is in the San Juanico area. Tens of miles of beach to the south, and great tide pools/surf fishing to the north. Weather will not be the best this time of year.

Perhaps you should talk to Sheri at Bahia Asuncion. Park your truck and trailer at her place and do your ATV ride/camp/fish north and south from there. She could fill you in on what to expect.

Check this out.

if there are pangas on the beach there should be gasoline nearby, although you may have to wait a day or two if they just left to re-up supplies in town.

Using Bahia Asuncion and Shari's La Bufadora Inn or La Sirena campground as a base camp could be an excellent alternative. Unlike the Seven Sisters, the Vizcaino Peninsula has much warmer, cloud free coastal weather. You could do runs to the famous Malarrimo Beach and look for treasure or what's floated over from Japan, and got caught in the big hook of Baja. There were gold mines, fossil shark's teeth, and even a lost mission (Santa Clara/ San Juan Bautista) in the area!

We just got back from Malarrimo Beach. Just follow our tracks and you won't get lost. There are goodies to be found.
