Whale Magic

Hola fellow whale enthusiasts. The last of the Gray whale mother’s and calves are passing by our casa in Bahia Asuncion these days. I wave at them and wish them well on their long journey north to feed and look forward to their return next year.

We had a wonderful whale season this year with the best weather I have ever experienced in central Baja. There were over 2,300 whales in the lagoon and many friendly encounters throughout the season. There are still a handful of whales in the lagoon as I write this at the end of April.

The commercial abalone season just began so we are living at our cabin at the San Roque fish camp where I have finally been able to take a look at my video footage and photos. It is so amazing to relive all the great whale encounters we had this season as I review the footage.

Here is a trip we did on Jan 23 with some Nomads...enjoy

This video shows two of the stars of the lagoon..Saddle and her boyfriend? Romeo and how they caress each other, roll around and sleep together. I wept when I saw them holding tails!!! Just so very tender and sweet. I had never seen two whales inseparable like this in all my years of whale watching...it was so romantic!

The edit process is so time consuming, then the sound becomes so repetitive getting it to match at just the right time. I sure your time north will be filled.

Thanks Shari! Well done! Now, with Excedde, I can watch them without the dreaded pause.

Lovely... thanks for posting.

I have great memories of that day in January, starting with the early morning drive to the lagoon from GN. It was magical, being surrounded by so many mom/calf pairs. (Any idea what happened to the calf with the odd tail- the "cola loca" that flipped sideways?)

And we had so many spy-hops and heads-up moves that day- lots of whales peeking at us.

It was a rare day for seeing so many whale cabezas up out of the water... Thanks for the reminder!
