Whales that go BUMP in the day!
Here is a short video starring Bumper..a calf who repeatedly twerked on our panga! I thought maybe he was just uncoordinated and gawky like a growing
kid but he did it a few times and seemed rather well aimed too. The last time, he slapped the motor and the tiller bounced up and hit the captain's
arm dislocating it. Luckily a doctor on board pulled it back in although he was pretty sore for a few days afterward.

I am trying Vimeo as I am not at all happy with the quality of youtube videos and not many people click on the thingy to watch it in HD. The movies
look so beautiful when I make them and then look like crap on youtube...dang it.

Maybe try to record in IMAX ! Dunno about the video technique, but last time out in a panga at Guerrero I can attest when you get bumped is more
thrilling than a theater seat. Good on ya, Shari, thanx.

I remember that day...
in part because the poor pangero was involved with 2 whale "bumps" that shook up his passengers- and him.
The one in this video was the 2nd of the day. It was so sudden: one moment, the calf was happily coming up to greet us. I think the mom was helping
lift the calf up towards the boat (still young and wobbly)...
The next: the panga lurched, and the outboard engine was gunned to max RPMs, as the poor captain grabbed the throttle for balance. Thank goodness
someone on board knew how to manage that shoulder dislocation!
As for the whales: I've never seen a mom and baby disappear so quickly! I think the roar of the outboard scared them as much as the bump scared the
humans....

here we go again !!
There is a BIG area between being a boat owner and that of a "captain" !! training would be good place to start...simple "Rules of the road" comes
to mind!! anyone can get a boat....not anyone can be called/earned the title of captain..used SO loosely when in many parts of the world....if you
don't know about CFR,,,ABYC,,SOLAS..PLEASE don't reply with gibberish........

the lancheros have to take a course and are certified in La Paz as captains...this particular captain has been a lanchero there for over 20 years.
This particular whale just liked bumping boats...nothing to do with poor seamanship.

Shari- Thank you for the clarification/information about qualifications needed to guide in the lagoons during whale season.
I've seen/heard "pangero" "lanchero" and "captain" used interchangeably in various places and posts. Maybe it's not exactly equivalent terms, but all
of the "boat operators" I have travelled with for 20+ years have impressed me with their skill, professionalism, knowledge and affection for the
whales.
As you say: this was an unusual incident due to a young whale still developing coordination, not poor boating skills. We recall it in part because it
was so unusual.
