New Book
My new book will be available soon. The title is: "Missions and Frontiers of Spanish America: A Comparative Study of the Impact of Environmental,
Economic, Political, and Socio-Cultural Variations on the Missions in the Rio de la Plata Region and on the Northern Frontier of New Spain." It will
be published by Pentacle Press in Scottsdale, Arizona (http://www.missionscalifornia.com/), and will be available in three versions: an e-book downloadable, on a cd, or conventional hard copy. The
e-book and cd have one advantage, the numerous photos and illustrations in color. Baja California figures prominently in the book.

Descanso Mission Photos
The final three Baja missions (including Descanso) can be seen at: http://www.vivabaja.com/bajamissions/page16.html
AA will tell you he believes that Descanso was only a new location for Mision San Miguel and not really a seperate, unique mission. It was later moved
to Guadalupe, the last mission established in California (Baja and Alta).
Here is Descanso about 55 years ago...

Descanso & Guadalupe
The Dominicans first developed the site now know as Descanso as a farming station in the mid-1790s. There were rules for establishing missions, and
permission first had to be obtained from the government. However, relocations could be done, and both Descanso and Guadalupe were new sites for San
Miguel.

New Book
The book will do two things: provide general information about the missions, and provide the larger colonial context for the development of missions.
It is a comparative study, but missions in California and Baja California figure prominently as examples. One chapter deals specifically with the
establishment of the missions in Baja California and California. The missions in the Rio de la Plata region are located in Paraguay and surrounding
areas of Argentina and Brazil. They are the missions loosely interpreted in the mid-1980s film "The Mission."

It sure is
I did not come up with the title, and I always prefer shorter ones. The publisher first hired somebody to suggest titles, and we agreed on one. Then
the publisher decided to market the book through the University of New Mexico press, and they asked to change the original title. This is the one they
agreed upon.

I didn't design the cover, or select the photos to be included. There has been one change made, though. The photo on the bottom right hand corner,
which is Santa Maria la Mayor mission located in Argentina, has been replaced by another shot of what is called the "missionary fountain" at San
Miguel mission in Brazil.
