AGUA DULCE Historic Spring (Baja Bound Article)

Baja Bound's August newsletter was just released...

Here is an article on Agua Dulce, the water hole on El Camino Real, near Highway One's Km. 160, between the El Marmol road and Cataviña.

The water sources along the mission road make a good study. Howard Gulick's 1954 El Camino Real Map does a good job listing them (Loreto to El Rosario).

Discovered by Padre Wenceslao Linck in 1766, exploring north from San Borja, modern map with 1966 expedition route. The name "Agua Dulce" was first provided by Padre Junípero Serra in his notes traveling from Loreto to San Diego, in 1769:

Shown on a 1905 hand drawn mines and roads map of northern Baja:

As mapped in 1905, published in 1919:

Shown on Arthur North's 1907 map:

Shown by David Goldbaum in 1919:

Agua Dulce on 1970 map (spring shown on wrong side of main road):

Agua Dulce 1962 by Howard Gulick (ranch ruins 1/2 mile from spring):

Agua Dulce 1975:

Agua Dulce on 1977 El Camino Real Map made for Harry Crosby:

Agua Dulce drawn in on 2003 Baja Almanac:

On the 2009 Almanac, Arroyo Agua Dulce is shown, but not the spring location. Non of the AAA maps show it.
