one fine summer day me and the local boyz were surfing Riptide Rights at OB Pier towards the end of summer. this musta been 1986 or so. SUDDENLY, the water started boiling about 30 feet in diameter and Jimbo Lockwood almost shat himself as a whale surfaced underneath him, in about 8 feet of water and proceeded to swim thru the pier towards the south!

we all scrambled in every direction to get away from the massive creature and to this day, i still think Jimbo shat himself!!!!

I dont think this poor whale is early....I think it never made the migration due to poor health &/or old age. This whale is not long for this world...god speed amigo!

On Vancouver Island, we often had whales that were sick....you could smell infection from their breath and see they were weak which is why they didnt make the full migration.

In Ojo de Liebre whale lagoon, we also see old whales that just stay in the very inner lagoon in the shallows where they can rest on the bottom and still breathe. I wonder if they go back to their birthplace to end their time on earth.

^^ very true Shari.

I realize it's "circle of life," still tugs at my heart to see them struggling.

I've seen lots of dead/dying whales over the years, esp during El Niņo years when there is less food for them. (They sometimes wash ashore in San Diego and require cleanup operations by city crews.)

I worry we may be in for another hi fatality/low birth season.
