Current Highway 5 road condition information?
Does anyone have any information re: recent road conditions driving south on Highway 5 from San Felipe to the intersection of Highway 1. I've heard
there's some rough road that requires 4-wheel drive. We're going to be headed to Todos Santos end of the month driving a Honda CR-V and pulling a
small utility trailer. Coming from Idaho, going through Mexicali seems like a good option for us since we go through Las Vegas. We're driven Highway 1
from Tijuana several times but not for the last few years. Just trying to figure out what might be best the best route.

I drove it just about a year ago driving a Kia Sportage, pulling a small utility trailer. Four wheel drive is not necessary, but the 23 miles that
are currently being worked on was slow going.
I would not want to drag a trailer with little bitty wheels and tires over that road, mine are 15 inch and low pressure. My load was pretty light as
well.
On the dirt road, you will see where you need to slow to crawl speed. what is less easy to get right is the vados (dips) on the older pavement between
San Felipe and Puertecitos. I can almost guarantee that you will hit a couple of them harder than you wanted to!
I will be traveling that road myself in the next few weeks, Hasta La Vista!
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

That stretch of road is in the process of being paved. Except for the dog leg around Coco's the pavement follows the current route. Expect
construction traffic and detours as the grading progresses. The good news is the construction activity means the existing dirt is being kept in good
shape.
Btw, the baja 1000 will be using the road northbound. Prerunning starts Nov 1. Just an FYI.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing we'd be crossing at Mexicali on Nov 1st headed south. Do you think that would be a problem re: the Baja 1000
pretrials headed north? We may have to rethink our dates and start our drive a little sooner.

Two and a half months ago, I reported on it and that hasn't changed...
1) 23 miles of graded dirt road, 4WD not needed unless it is raining.
2) The road is in a highway construction zone, expect delays, detours, dodging big trucks.
3) The surface is rough for any vehicle and not recommended for pulling a trailer over.
4) Fresh photos and reports on Facebook yesterday shows no change to the above.
North of Coco's Corner.
New route will bypass Coco's Corner to the west.
Between Coco's and Highway One.
Be ready to get out of their way!
