Southbound I-5/ I-805 crossing from San Ysidro into El Chaparal improvement begaining to take shape.

The big UETA duty free store at the last US exit (Camino de La Plaza) is now closed and demolition will commence as soon as stock and fixtures are removed according to one of the managers. Then Camino de La Plaza will be widened and rerouted to eliminate that terrible double curve going into the Mx POE at El Chaparal without affecting the existing outlet stores.

That terrible double curve was never supposed to be there, plans were always for the freeway to come straight in. Calderón wanted to leave office with a semi-functional El Chaparral crossing, so he ordered the curve as a stop-gap to be used only for as long as it took the U.S. to catch up. The GSA got about ten years behind schedule because they forgot to take into account San Ysidro's wishes for land use and ecology.

UETA store

So since this UETA store is closed down is there any use in stopping to shop now??? I've never been there and thought I'd stop by this year( in a couple of weeks) on my trip down to Baja Sur. Is there other stores that would make a stop worthwhile...a Trader Joes or anything?
