We went to Lopez Mateos on Monday and were able to interact with a mom and calf. There were maybe half a dozen pairs left in the lagoon. They are shutting down whale watching operations there this Sunday, I was told. Laguna is probably similar, though you might have an extra week. Good luck.

March is not the month to see whales in Baja. Just about everyone of them have left.
The only exceptions are a handful that decide to stay year-round, and they generally head to the SOC.

Last year this week we were in San Ignacio Lagoon and there were many mothers with calves. We were told 110+ pairs. We were exhausted after 2 hours on the water due to virtually non stop interaction with very relaxed whales constantly approaching our panga. We also went this week in 2014, 2012 and 2010 and had the same experience. Every year is a different so you never really know what to expect.

Season officially closes April 15th.

Maybe send Pachicos an email and ask about latest census?

YMMV

March can be a very good month to see the friendly whales in San Ignacio --- we have had very good luck during March.

However, the only problem can be the increase in the wind that can prevent the boats from going out. We got caught in the wind once that was really bad, but since the Kuyima operator could not get us back without us being soaked, no matter how slow he went, he dropped us off at the camp and a van came for us.

Since we like to drive out the the lagoon, we check in town about the wind before we go. Kuyima will radio to see if the boats are going out or not. It is worth the wait.
