Now open: new Ped West border xing in San Ysidro
I see it is way west of the trolley station, near the new Mexican auto entry facility,... I don't get it. As a pedestrian, isn't this just a really
inconvenient location?

There's a good map at the following link. The old northbound pedestrian crossing on the east side is going to rebuilt so you can cross on both sides.
Sounds like they're keeping the east side crossing open, albeit with fewer (6) lines during construction.
The east side crossing has 14 lines and it is going to be expanded. The new west side crossing has 14 lines. So when construction is finished the
capacity will be at least doubled, more than 28 lines.
Of course whether or not they staff all the lines is another question. Maybe it will be like the new car lines where they built tandem booths in each
line but staff only one of them.

That is the point, just looked at the crossing times, the bwt
site lists the ped west crossing, the original east ped crossing
had 2 lanes open with 1:20 wait time, the west listed no delay with 6 lanes

Any word if there is a Sentri ped lane at both east and west ports, or if the Sentri line has been moved to the west as well? I agree that having two
ports of entry is a good idea, but does not seem to make sense having only one entry for SB. That is a long walk from the PedWest entrance to get back
into Mexico!

Does anyone have driving directions to the new drop off point?
Which entry is better- taking people to the east or west side of the freeway?
(I can't access the news article- it's behind a pay per view wall.)
Thank you!

Feedback I have been getting is that the wait is shorter at the new PedWest facility for a Saturday. I guess the overall reconstruction project calls
for a complete makeover of the SY pedestrian facility which would require at minimum a vast reduction of available processing lanes at the old SY
pedestrian crossing facility. Looks like PedWest near Chaparral was the best they could come up with.
They announced that there will be a shuttle service available to take you from PedWest to the trolley station as well as new bus station routes with
stops immediately out in front. A big plus for me is the fact that it will be much easier now to pickup passengers who cross on foot. It was really
getting crowded over by the Jack-n-the-box...

Nothing changed since it is only for northbound crossings at this time.
So to go south into México it's still on the east side.

For pickup of pedestrians going north, take the Camino de la Plaza exit on southbound I-805 and follow it to Virginia Street, where the new crossing
is located toward the left. Don't use I-5.
As already mentioned, the new crossing is not yet set up for dropoff of pedestrians going south into Mexico.

From the picture and from the text it looks like Ped West is a Northbound only. Not too many people come into the US and then immediately return back
to Mexico.

Looks like 1200' from the Trolley station on the east side
of 5 to the Ped West crossing, less than 1/4 mi
