Crossing Border With Scuba Tanks?

I was recently told that it is no longer legal to cross the border into Mexico with scuba tanks. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Thanks in advance Nomads! :?:

I suppose the only way to inspect it for contraband is to X-ray tank or empty tank and remove cap to visually inspect, eh?

"The Dive Shop" in Tucson told me this when I was recently renting tanks. It would not be in their best interest to give bad info on this, since I am taking the tanks to Mexico. Must be a regional thing. Thanks for the feedback!
