Vagabudo' Cruise July 05'

Here is the run down for this great time to be had this summer...Contact Jay for added details:tumble:

HAMMER TIMES
12th Annual Vagabundo Small Boat Cruise 2005

Okay Vags, I know it's winter, but I'm already thinking Baja Summer Fun. Besides good summers require planning. Picture this: It's the middle of summer. You're on anchor early in the morning at beautiful Agua Verde. The dawn is just beginning to break the morning darkness. While you finish your morning coffee, the sun paints the Sierra Gigante in shades of red and orange. Your boat slips over the mirror smooth water and only the sight of diving birds and frolicking dolphins on the distant horizon distracts you. Your on your way to the ?Yellowstone Bluffs? of Isla Monserrate for lunch and later the ?Painted Coast?. You will be anchoring/vag rafting on the white sand beaches of Bahia Salinas, Puerto Ballandra and Isla Coronados. Loreto favorites. Outstanding diving, fishing, photography, exploring and just plain relaxing. Who know's you might even see one of the many Baja Sur Big Horn sheep of Carmen Island. There will be ?Best Margarita ? contests each night and high quality B.S. (Baja Stories) as well as Vag camaraderie. Would you like to be part of this picture? Well, here is an opportunity for you to do just that. Let's go cruising this summer! Cruceros where are you? I've repowered and ?Hammer Time? is ready to go. Are you? This cruise is an idea that came from the Vags who live in Loreto who wanted a cruise not being far from home, not traveling long distances, being more comfortable cruising in smaller boats and enjoying some of Loreto's favorite spots with other Vag Cruceros. Well Vagabundos de Loreto; this one is for you!

Thursday - June 30 Tijuana - San Quintin (185 miles)
Before the cruise, I am again planning my Hammer Time caravan to Loreto. No reservations, entry fees or rules; just meet me at the first toll booth at 7:00 A.M. Thursday - June 30, 2005. We will then travel down the Baja 1 to San Quintin and Cielito Lindo ( A Little Piece of Heaven) Motel; a Vag favorite. There's also a La Pinta close by if you prefer better digs (check out the La Pinta Travel Pass on the internet). You can meet us at the toll booth or join us at the Gypys Camp Beach party or whatever. While passing through San Quintin you might want to stop and use one of the ATM's on the main drag, just look for the banks, to get pesos for the trip. Buying gas is must less a mystery if your dealing in pesos. The Gypsy Camp Beach Party will be part of the itinerary this year. Make sure you try the famous Gypsy breakfast burritos and the famous Stone Crab dinners at Cielito Lindo Restaurant. I usually buy a few burritos to go for lunch on the road to Guerrero Negro.

Friday July 1, 2005 - 4th Annual Vagabundos Beach Party

Gypsys Beach Camp, Rancho Cielito Lindo in San Quintin will host this popular family-oriented event. The popular desert casting contest will be held, followed by a 6 p.m. Mexican-style pig roast dinner with beans, rice and cactus salad. Cheap tequila sampling will follow the dinner. Contest prizes and door prizes will be awarded. The fee will be determined.
Motel and full hookups are available at nearby Cielito Lindo. There is camping on the beach at Gypsys Camp with restrooms and hot showers. This date has been selected so that those on the Hammer time vagabundo caravan that are driving to the Loreto Dorado Tournament can participate, enjoying a pleasant two-night stop at Cielito Lindo, arriving June 30 and leaving July 2. For more information contact hosts David and Juanita Fitzpatrick at (619) 593-BAJA or gypsys@bajasi.com. Call Vag HQ at (800) 474-2252 for reservations and payment.

Saturday, July 2 - San Quintin - Guerrero Negro (257 miles)

Today's destination is Guerrero Negro. Leave Cielito Lindo after breakfast burritos at Gypsys. Top off gas tanks at El Rosario; a must. Head out for Guerrero Negro for tonights rest and a great dinner at Malarrimo's. Try a Mexican wine with dinner. They have a superb selection and the fresh seafood is the ticket.

Sunday, July 3 - Guerrero Negro - Loreto (259 miles)

Leave Guerrero Negro, after a pleasant breakfast at Malarrimo's, destination Loreto. Arrive in Loreto in the Afternoon and prepare for the ?World Famous Vagabundo Dorado Tournament?.

July 3-6, 2005 - ?World Famous Vagabundo Dorado Tournament?

We're back in Loreto with this very popular tournament and will again have a Small Boat Cruise afterward, this time south to Agua Verde and then north to some of Loreto's favorite spots. This time of year sees many billfish, as well as dorado and tuna. Registration will be on Sunday, July 3, the three-day tournament on July 4-6 and the Awards Banquet the last night. If you are interested in traveling down with a group, check with Vag HQ. There will be a registration fee of $45 (members) and $50 (non-members) for the tournament, Call Vag HQ (800) 474-2252 to sign up and pay the fee. Contact Activity Leader Roger Franklin, email rogerfranklin@sbcglobal.net.

Thursday July 7 - Pre Launch Last Minute Meeting (12 NOON)
We will be spending this day preparing our boats to go south in the morning. Tripui Resort has set aside secure storage for trucks and trailers at $3 a day, for which you should make reservations. SEE Tripui Resort and RV from above contact numbers. As always, we will have a pre - launch rendezvous at 12 NOON at the Tripui Restaurant (Pool Area) to discus important details over Margaritas! Each boat crew will need to check in with the Port Captain (speaks excellent English and is very friendly) to fill out cruise documents (despachos) before we leave. You will need passports and visitors permits (FMTs) for everyone one your boat and your boat registration. This process is necessary when boats are out on the water over 24 hours. Also as a reminder make sure you have your Mexican boat insurance, Mexican boat liscense, and a Mexican Fishing Liscense for each person on your boat whether they are fishing or not. There will be a nominal boat launching fee at Puerto Escondido. There also may be a $1 a day fee for being in the National Park.
Friday July 8 - Puerto Escondido - Aqua Verde (26 Nautical Miles)

*Some might want to launch on Thursday evening and spend the night at Honey Moon Cove (25'48.18' N 111' 10.70' W) or the Waiting Room (25' 48.38' N 111' 18.11' W).
Today is launch day! We launch at Puerto Escondido (entrance 25' 48.38' N 111' 18.11' W) and proceed south to Aqua Verde (entrance 25' 31.52' N 111' 3.90' W). The picturesque fishing village is nestled in many coves. This is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Mexico, so don't forget your camera. We usually raft up in the south cove before breaking out for the night. There also can be clamming on the beach.

Saturday July 9 - Aqua Verde - ?Yellowstone Beach? Isla Monserrate - Bahia Salinas.
After coffee and breakfast we will turn north and cruise up to Yellowstone Beach Isla Monserrate (25' 42.56' N 111' 3.12' W) for lunch (8 nautical miles). This bay features a beautiful white sand beach/sand dunes and yellow sandstone rock outcroppings which are very distinct along with crystal clear water. Next we will venture across to (3 nautical miles) to Salinas Bay (25' 59.5' N 111' 07.5' W) on Carmen Island. The bay is easily identified by a large conspicuous, abandoned settlement at the extreme north end and a red and white striped lighthouse to the east. The beach is beautiful. At the east end is an abandoned , salt processing plant. School, church and residences. A broken down pier with a wreck is about half a mile south. This is a very interesting ghost town to explore. There is good diving and fishing to be had close by.

Sunday July 10 - Bahia Salinas ?Painted Coastline? Puerto Ballandra
?Sand blasted coastline of subtle colored rock largely inhospitable but entirely fascinating? Willaim Johnston ?Baja California?. We will set out in a northeast direction, circling Punta Perico (25' 58.30' N 111' 4.53' W)and heading for Punta Lobo. In route you will pass the famous ?Painted Coast? staying at least a half mile offshore of the rocky underwater bolders. Rounding Punto Lobo you will pass The ?V? cove ( 1 mile south of La Lancha) and Puerto de La Lancha (26' 03.5' N 111' 07.0' W) which are very interesting to explore. Continuing on you will come to Bahia Oto (26' 02.3' N 111'10.0' W) with a small white sand beach. Then you will come to one of the most popular anchorages on Carmen island ; Puerto Ballandra (Entrance 26' 1.17' N 111' 10.33' W). You will follow the emerald green canyon to the middle beach as the waters turn colors as you get into shallower water and beautiful white sand beach. The hills behind the beach are easy to climb and give breath taking vistas for the photographer. The many shades of sapphire blue and emerald green of he water are particularly vivid. You may also want to take a hike down the lovely valley, which follows a dry river bed, and enters a narrow gorge which opens up into a valley.

Monday July 11 - Ballandra - Coronados
We will now hop across the bay to Isla Coronados (26' 6.81' N 111' 17.36' W). Here we will encounter yet another pristine white sand beach with crystal clear water. Here you may want to do some beach combing. The main body of the island is an extinct volcano. Some might want to hike to the cone as others will no doubt try the excellent diving and fishing of the area.

Tuesday July 12 - Coronado - Loreto - Puerto Escondido

As we are now close to Loreto (26' 1.07' N 111'20.31' W), we will cruise south possibly stopping in North Loreto or the launching area to fuel up; a possible haul out here also is possible. The cruise will continue down the coast passing Nopolo (25' 55' N 111' 21' W) and on to Puerto Escondido (25' 49' N 111' 19' W). Side trips might be lunch over at Bahia Marquer (25' 52.02' N 111' 13.18' W) on Carmens southwest coast or Bahia Chuelque where there is a small fishing village ; Juncalito. Bahia Marqquer features a gravel beach has some good viewpoints which are within easy hiking distance. It also opens up into a lush green arroyo (narrow canyon) behind the beach under the sandstone cliffs. At one of the islands off Bahia Cheulque there is a sunken airplane in shallow water which makes for interesting diving.
Today our cruise ends at Puerto Escondido as we pull out our boats or squeeze another night on the water in at Honeymoon cove before leaving. If some would like to buddy back this can be arranged for the return trip to the states according to schedules. Buen Viaje!

There are always travel options available on a Vag cruises and many of you will want to vary your cruise schedule to fit your own needs. Please feel free to do so, after all we are Vagabundos Cruceros. That's what crusiing is all about. If you would like to join us, please contact Vagabundo HQ for the sign up (800) 474 - 2252. For more information call Jay Hammer at (909) 238 -8088 Cel, Home (951) 687 7992 or email jayshammer@aol.com. I will provide more of the finer details at the pre launch meeting at Tripui at 12 Noon (7/7). I highly suggest you have a good GPS on board as well as depth indicator. Books which I highly recommend are: Gerry Cruise charts (gerrycruise.com). His GPS readings are most accurate as he has taken them himself in the exact spots. He also points out dangerous areas and has updates which are very helpful. Baja Boater's Guide II by Jack Williams for a detailed description of the coastline (VAG Bookstore). Another good source is ?Sea of Cortez? Cruising Guide by Simon and Nancy Scott, Cruising Guide Publications cgp@earthlink.net 1-800-330-9542 fax (813) 734-8175

Great cruse...

Boy, I have to say I wish I could make this trip...Sounds so free and easy. Planed on last years, but we would have been out one day when Tripui burned...Saved my Cabo 226 and my neighbors Cabo 216 but not much more.We will be down at the time of this cruise, but in Loreto at the Oasis, I like the Idea of the short cruise... Can not wait tell next year, when the Cabo is back...
