Believe it or not! roadrunner sighting June 18
Well, we have been adopted. A roadrunner simply decided to adopt us -at first it slept on the porch on top of one of my high plants and then it
decided that our garage was more comfy and here he? she? is on top of the cooler:
I have named the roadrunner Junior as our dog Rex has to be senior in this household. Here it is surveying its new territory which it coos on the
roof here at the house and the B&B to claim. It absolutely cares not one hoot that Rex barks at it, it runs circles around Rex LOL We are
trying to get Rex to leave it alone, but he is a springer spaniel and his gut says "let me just get ahold of you!!"
Now, normally Junior wakes up at 9 or 9:30, spreads his wings in the sun while still inside the garage and then slowly makes his way out......at
6ish, it comes back and gets in his spot and there he stays all night.
Today, things changed a bit: we saw him coming in during the day with a twig in his mouth. Either he is building his girlie a nest or she is building
herself a nest. I am not sure this is such a good idea in our garage ....
We have never fed it since there are plenty of insects all around. If anyone here knows about these creatures, pray tell us what you know. I read a
bit online, and learned that they coo to mark territory but that is the extent of my knowledge on this most curious creature that we are enchanted
with!

Nesting behavior. You haven't seen 2 around? We had some nest at work and watched them raise 3 babies. It was great to watch.

I would think a correcamino would be an asset around the house. Good hunters of larger bugs and small reptiles. They will, probably, kill the young of
other birds, though. They are also one of the only known predators of the tarantula hawk wasp or pepsis wasp.

All I know about roadrunners is they gotta watch out for this guy...

We had some in Havasu that would wait at the sliding glass door to be fed. They became almost tame, and came in the house if the screen was left open.
Like meany says, little balls of burger. I think they are good snake birds too.

Yup, as far as birds go, a house wren flew into the glass door and laid on the step for a few seconds, but as soon as we weren't looking... beep!
beep! It was gone -- as dinner.

So no dangers with diseases with roadrunners? My mom had a mite infestation at her house when she removed a bird nest from her porch.
Gives me the eebie jeebies just to think of mites in the house!
I don't think we shall feed Junior because I am really happy that he /she is eating all the insects, not a roach around for months now!

I think this is one of the most enjoyable threads out there.
I'd almost just drive down to meet Beep-Beep.
Can we get daily "Beep" reports? Please.

They are definitely one of the coolest birds in the desert, I love seeing them but it is kind of rare and usually only get a glimpse of them. A couple
months ago one was wandering around our beach camp and made himself quite visible for a while, very cool watching him hunt.

say what???? hahaha I can deal with dust mites.
Junior did not add to his nest today, he was gone all day. He did coo (and sounds like a dove) all morning and then went off.
Here is the beginning of his/her nest. One twig on the right and another on the left.

Howard - thanks so much....as each day goes by we become more and more attached to this bird although I am still ambivalent about a nest in the
garage....
It is very skittish and I try to stay away when I know it is around - Les swears it is used to him already since he is in and out of the garage for
tools all day long.
We only see one bird. And in the 11 years we have lived here, this is maybe the 2nd or 3rd bird I have ever seen. It is really amazing how they
blend into the desert.
It is a lot of work to coo and declare this house his territory:
Here he is with a twig in his mouth:

"It is a lot of work to coo and declare this house his territory"
So Les's cooing is getting better? Good for him!
