Murder A Day Keeps Tourists Away In TJ

February 9, 2005

TIJUANA, Mexico -- Tijuana, Mexico, is averaging a murder a day this month as the border region experiences a crime wave that has alarmed observers.

The death of a man who was found shot Tuesday raised the city's homicide toll this year to 50.

A spike in violence along the U.S.-Mexico border recently prompted Washington officials to issue a travel advisory for the region.

Observers attribute the crime wave to powerful drug-smuggling groups they say are battling for control.
