The Gadsten Purchase
Mind you, this is all just hearsay and campfire talk; once I was told the Gadsten Purchase original survey and surveyors were supposed to head pretty
much due west from the NM boot heel and AZ corner to Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) and then on to Tijuana, so America could have a Naval seaport on
the Sea of Cortez; but the team tried doing the surveying in the summer and was so hot they just marked and bee-lined it for Yuma, settling for Sandy
Eggo instead. I've looked for back-up on the claim, but haven't found any. Just curious if anyone else ever heard that story?

Read some more TOTAL heresay, not making claim to accuracy,
possible total fabrication,
but in a somewhat related topic, I
believe this was after the Mex /US war, negotiations were taking place to
establish the boundary between the US/Mex. Some sort of
communication from the US to it's negociator, was intercepted
by Mex. Apparently Mex was prepared to include Baja in the
land it was giving up to the US. The communication said if
Mex wants to keep the Peninsula, not to make an issue of it.
So thanks to whatever stroke of luck that prevented Baja
from becoming part of the US

This by sancho is the closest to recorded history.
We had Baja, our flag was flying at La Paz and San Jose del Cabo.
Mexico reasoned it would be an insult to have a long finger of the United States sitting out in front of its coast of Sonora. Our man at the table was
told to not insist on keeping the peninsula if it became a stumbling block.
Sadly, the people of Baja (long ignored by Mexico City), who were looking forward to becoming part of the U.S., didn't get to be Americans for long.
In the deal, all those Baja Californians who believed they were in danger for publically desiring American citizenship, were relocated to Alta
California by the U.S. Navy, from La Paz.

Sancho, you wear your heart on your sleeve. "Stroke of luck" eh? That's why they are all so prosperous now huh. Especially San Quintin where we get
all our yummy fruit and 'maters from.
DK, that's true and covered in the wiki article. The deal was rescinded from taking it to La Paz, but my story told to me was at least having Puerto
Peñasco as a Navy base at least, and heading due west from there... but the summer heat and the formidable Sierras made the survey team run for
shelter at Yuma, and that's the 'jog' of the present border.
Once again, full disclaimers in place... just hearsay and campfire talk from a 'Scholah'.

Sounds like a good story... there are many in history.
Mexico insisted on having a land bridge of respectable size to their "island" of California.
