Just talked to a school parent who has a business there ( he is a Mexicano ) and he says there are plenty of bodies dropping that people are not hearing about.
He thinks the tactic now is to make sure they are becoming more publicly known.
I can only relay what he has told me, though.

Before this past election, I never really thought of the power that the media has in both reporting and not reporting. I think that what Señor Soulpatch is saying resonates with this. At the rate that Baja Norte is going they are on track to meet or exceed 2008 murder rate but we don't hear too much of it, then when we do, we get peeed off because they are reporting it.

According to the US State Dept., there have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-120 murders of Americans in Mexico for the last five years or so. So, it is not an insignificant amount.

It is likely that 99% of these were involved in the drug trade. Probably a very high percentage were Mexican Americans who have relatives in both countries.

FWIW, it seems the percentage of "gringos" who are murdered, is very low. Lets face it, the term "gringo" is used by gringos and non-gringos to mean someone who most would consider "white". Mexicans in my area would never call a Mexican American down here, a gringo. That term seems to be reserved for descendants of northern Europeans, especially Canadians and Americans. I guess the overly politically sensitive would bristle at all this, but it is a term of convenience that is used by persons inside and outside of the gringo group.

So, if you are within the accepted definition of a "gringo", your chances of being murdered in Mexico are still extremely low. I would venture to say that more gringos are probably killed in barroom disputes than in a gun battle.

I completely agree with the above comment that, by far, the biggest threat to a gringo is the chance of being robbed or kidnapped by some fringe drug trade guy. The Canadian who was supposedly killed with a shovel is a good example (despite the ridiculous allegations by JJJ; those are laughable). Catching a stray bullet is apparently really rare when you consider how little it has occurred , as a percentage of all these drug-related bullets that have been fired. I'm surprised there hasnt been more collateral damage from this (or maybe it just isnt reported, who knows?). Often times (but not always), we only hear about gringos being murdered when the local news media in the person's home town runs a story on their murder.

It appears that the number of "kidnappings" of Americans in Mexico is in the neighborhood of 50-100 per year. It also appears that when someone is taken against their wishes to an ATM machine and forced to withdraw funds, that is considered a kidnapping. It's not just the traditional kidnapping where the victim is held in a location until a ransom is paid.

Just pointing all this out as there are many conflicting claims about the incidence of violence directed at Americans in this thread. Personally, I trust the violence statistics released by the US State Dept much more than anything coming from Mexico; whether the government or the media.

Apparently a tourist was injured in this one. It was close to the grand Myan.

An hour ago there was a shootout by the Grand Myan in which two guards were killed and two bullet ridden cars. Additional casualties are assumed from the emergency response. My friend was at the horse corrals and heard the gunfire and saw the response. There was a report on one of the Mexican websites that has since been removed (my cousin told me this).

I think the message is clear enough. They have upped the game and thrown down the gauntlet.

This will be my last post on the subject.
