Looking For Lodging in Gonzaga Bay on May 21th
Six of us in 3 trucks, and three 18' aluminum boats are heading to GB on Sunday May 21th and departing Friday the 26th (wagon master's vacation
period). That is if we can find reserved lodging. Either hotel rooms or a house rentals. Launch ramp would be nice but can launch from a hard-packed
beach but not preferred. Like me, our average age is over 70 and most have been fishing Baja from the '50's or '60's.
This part of Baja along with BA are the only parts I have not fished at yet, so I'm excited about the trip. I'm a bottom fishing explorer who loves
to seek out new places to depths of 300'. Just my boat alone will have 1lb of frozen squid per day of fishing as well as a large ziplock bag of salt
cured anchovies and sardines (leftover live bait). Along with a small live bait tank if we catch bait. The others are lure-throwing and trolling guys
so we have our battles each trip of where to go so we always keep together. Haven't lost one yet!

Yes alfonsina's I used Papa's boat launch clear back in the early 70s. We didn't have a paved road there !!!!! Like you do now.

The hard pack clay at Alfonsina's is used on the highest tides (across the runway from the hotel).
If the hotel there is too fancy of filled, then there are cabins at Beluga and El Sacrificio, to the south. Beach launching at those two.

Thanks for the Lodging Tips
The wagon master ended up reserving 3-rooms for our stay. I do not know which one yet but I'm guessing it is Alphonso's since it's the same price as
on its board above. Therefore, I'm in for my 1st GB adventure! With pics and my usual rambling story of the adventure. When you get my age you do
kinda wonder how many more there are.
Any tips on fishing from methods, baits and where will be greatly appreciated. Also places to visit in the local area after a morning of fishing,
lunch, and a siesta........before beer... wine...dinner...sleep and do it all over again. No women allowed so boys can be boys once again.

Lots of places to visit but some need a 4x4 vehicle, do you have that?
Onyx shelf west of the store, Lacy grave, Palm trees and well west of hwy 5 just before end of pavement. Takes a little doing to get there and out,
think sand. La Turquesa mine. Las Arrastras and Cocos. Mission Calamajue and the abandoned fish camp on the gulf.

There are also some mines in the area south closer to Cocos if you like exploring that kind of stuff.

Thanks for the replies
We made reservations at Alfonsina's Hotel, 6 people, 3 rooms for May 21-26. Two of us may stay longer depending on fishing and/or weather. A couple
of other questions:
1. The hotel does not allow cooking in the rooms. What about outside? I plan on bringing a charcoal 14" Weber Smokey Mountain to be used as a smoker
or as a grill. Is this allowed?
2. There is a restaurant in the hotel. Are their other restaurants in the area?
3. Are there stores in the area to get supplies of rum, coke, ice and beer?
4. Any local fishing guides to guide one of our boats?

1) You are on the beach... Just don't burn the hotel down by cooking on the deck!
2) YES! I have posted photos many of the times... Garlic shrimp the #1 meal for me. There is a sometimes open restaurant at Rancho Grande store and
there is a good little restaurant at Papa Fernandez' on the north side of the bay. See the photo of Papa with John Wayne there. Photos of this
restaurant in my New Years 2016 trip report. A great place is about 6 miles north, called La Poma.
3) Yes, 1: Rancho Grande, on the highway 1.8 miles from the motel. They have groceries and liquor, but this isn't a big market... just amazing for
where you are. San Felipe is the last supermarket southbound.
4) That should be easy to arrange... no personal experience on this, sorry!

As to locals, try Captain Jesus out of Rancho Grande...really nice guy who can take you south to some great grouper grounds. Also "friend" Captain
Juan Cook out of San Quintin as he has some Bahia Gonzaga posts and knows some fishermen there I think at Papa Fernandez. As you probably know, keep
an eye out for the winds...the onshore can be bad but the offshore can be downright nuts!

six of you.....$5K apiece and $170 a year each you can own your own home, leave your boats, motors, tackle, all your crap right there....in one of
friendliest safest camps in baja, papa fernandez!

They were doing some work at the hotel about a month ago when I stopped by for breakfast. A bit noisy.
The restaurant has been recently renovated and is a lot "nicer" but lost some of it's old charm, IMHO.

Where to Fish?
Thanks for the replies which I greatly appreciate. Now the next phase is "where are the fish"?
The 6 of us in three 18' aluminum boats (all old farts) plan on fishing together on the 4-days we have for fishing (m-th). We have a dilemma cuz 4-5
of us like to throw irons and troll where I'm strictly a researcher on what the depths of the ocean hold. But we somehow will come to a consensus.
On the map below which areas should we target to catch dinner for the night both shallow and deep-water for me (100-350')? From other BN reports the
Golden Reef is too far with too many weather dangers for us to try. The mileages are just estimates.
If we are fortunate to catch more than we can eat on this trip, is there someone or place in the area we can donate the extra fish to?

ask anyone how to set up on cactus point, just off the now gone shipwreck. if there's a certain unmentionable species biting, it'll be loaded with
gringo boats. big cabrilla and gulf grouper!

Well if ya wanna throw irons and troll you better be near shore-ish I would think? That would answer a lot of your questions. You'll never go hungry
with some small hooks and squid. Trigger: tastes like chicken...only better. Bring some ceviche fixins
