Hwy 1 to Evaristo to La Paz 3/19

I've wanted to see this area ever since a friend and I flew around there more than 20 years ago in his Cessna. Because of time constraints for this trip I decided to try to drive all the way through in one day although I was equipped for camping. The area was as spectacular as I expected and I plan to return and spend more time there. I left Hwy 1 about 20 miles south of Santa Rita, very good road. Around La Presa the scenery became impressive. Lots of water in many palm arroyos from La Presa through Las Animas and beyond. Road was generally good although 4wd was used on some steep sections and low range from time to time especially on sections of the descent to Evaristo. The views from east of Las Animas were spectacular. Stopped to chat with a rancher at Las Cuevas, very scenic location and he said there was cave art nearby and offered to take me there, that will be on the next trip. Evaristo is a pretty spot and the road south from there has interesting and colorful strata in the cliffs. In general the road to La Paz was also scenic and intersting. Since it was Sunday late afternoon there were a lot of locals on the beaches, from La Paz I assume. On that road somewhere north of San Juan de la Costa I was stopped when a Mercedes G series went by and we exchanged waves. Was that one of our La Paz nomads? Wish I had flagged him down.

Arrived in La Paz about dusk and got a 350 peso room at the Oasis, decent bed and a shower met my needs. Up early the next morning and got to the Malecon and scored a parking place right in front of La Perla. Joined the throng of locals for an early Malecon walk and then breakfast at La Terraza. Yes i know there may be better spots but I first ate there 40+ years ago and it brings back memories of my first ride down Baja in 1974 on my new CB750.

It was a great drive through a beautiful area, I'll be back to explore more. BTW, the old Explorer turned 299,000 miles on that loop. Refuses to die.
