To me, the greatest thing about the internet is how information about faulty engine systems are shared and fixes are publicized. I have probably saved
between 10-20k in repairs.
If you were able to wait on buying even the best diesels (IMO, the 7.3 Navistar and the 5.9 Cummins), you would be aware of their shortcomings and can
take pre-emptive measures to fix those systems before they fail.
I have a 2000 Ford with the 7.3. By combing through the diesel forums that popped up in the early 2000s, some things were evident. The trannys failed
in heavy, hot use. Other issues with this truck was the cam position sensor and the throttle positioner at the foot pedal.
The sleeved pistons requires a special coolant additive that would eventually cause failure of the water pump seal, the thermostat and the thermostat
housing. I was fortunate to be a member of a diesel forum where a guy who bought a huge fleet of 7.3s became the person who revealed the cooling
cavitation issues to Ford and led to the need for the additive. He also passed on information when coolants were developed that no longer needed the
additive.
The tranny issues with the 4r100 tranny turned out to be the torque converter, not the tranny itself. The converters from about 99-03 were single disc
converters. Under heavy loads, there would be much slipping of the disc, which created heat, which was transferred to the tranny and caused it to
fail. Many of us who bought used 99-03s simply replaced the torque converter with the one from 04-06; a triple disc model. It wasnt that expensive,
if you knew where to buy online. The internet to the rescue again. Mine never failed even though I towed an 8000 lb boat and a camper on the back to
Baja a few times. Also towed a 36 foot TT around the Desert SW in the summer, at elevation. No trannny issues, but I am only at 236k now. Of course,
running synthetic tranny fluid is probably the single best thing anyone can do for a tranny. Conventional fluid breaks down at a much lower temp.
That's what takes out trannies; that and simply dirty fluid.
I do still use a programmer that brings the stock 235hp up to 275, supposedly. It is certainly faster and stronger than on the stock setting.
The internet also revealed the infamous lift pump issues with the 5.9 Cummins. Many replaced those before they failed.
It's easy for a Toyota truck owner to point out how little fails on their trucks. But Toyotas are never asked to do even half of what we ask our
diesels to do. There will be occasional issues when towing weights that are 3-5 times the unladen weight of a Tacoma by itself.

Good points, all...It really pays to research and understand the weaknesses of the engine you pick AND to add things that help you understand how
your engine is feeling....Transmission temp guage example. Trucks that are not asked to do truck work shouldn't be held up as examples ....
