What an insulting write up to both Americans, and Mexicans!
And the word "gabacho" is a pejorative slur. You could get away with using the word "Gringo" but not "gabacho, unless you're Gustavo Arellano, who
pokes fun at Americans, Mexicans, and Mexico stereotypes, and even then it's an slur that shouldn't be used.
The writer here is some throw back named, Dave Barton, who has written for the OC Weekly for over twenty years, and probably when the OC was Reagan
country, and the last bastion of conservatism.
I doubt Dave Barton, even recently visited Tijuana, but instead pushed one stereotype after another that he heard about or recounts his personal visit
20 years ago.

The term 'gabacho' is not insulting nor a pejorative slur in Mexico. I have heard it used many of times among friends, latinos and gabachos.
I'm guessing the word was googled which will interpret it as pejorative, in SPAIN!
In Mexico it is used to describe foreigners, especially when the nationality is not known.
As far as the article it is quite accurate, boring and just one person's opinion. Tijuana, centro, smells - so what.

I don't find the use of the word "gabacho" insulting. I've heard it hundreds of times in Mexico. It's used interchangeably with "gringo."

Your own links says the word "gabacho" is derogatory in Spain towards the French.
In the same link it does say the word "gabacho" is synonymous with the word "gringo" in Mexico, but the example they use of the policeman stopping
then in a car with placas gabachas is in many ways insulting.
Here is another definition from "Wikipedia, that says the word "gabacho" is a slang derogatory word used by Chicanos towards white Americans.
Maybe, because I'm Mexican-American, I definitely know the word "gabacho" is derogatory, and is often used in a derogatory way in places like Orange
County by Mexican-Americans, towards white people.
Perhaps when Mexican nationals use the word "gabacho" there isn't much of a sting with the slang word, but then again, you really don't know what that
smiling Mexican national is really thinking about white Americans.
I think in Mexico, or at least in Baja, the slang word "gabacho" is used more than the word 'gringo," because it seems only gringos call each other
gringos.

It's a slur. Just as Gringo is a slur.
Would any self-respecting Mexican say, "ohh yeah...I'm a beaner" just because someone thinks it's cute? Hopefully not.

I was waiting for Dennis to jump in this thread, because for years he has claimed that the word "gringo" is a slur.
I think Dennis says this so he could insult Mexicans with slang words like "beaner."
Gringo, would be a slur if the "P" word would be used before gringo, and the same goes for gabacho.
I don't think there are too many white Americans who are insulted over the word gringo, and there is even a US made movie titled " Old Gringo" and
American businesses having the word 'gringo" in the title of their businesses. I don't think this would be the case if the word "gringo" was a slur.
I will say it's sad that many Mexicans often use physical attributes when referring to someone or giving them that nickname, for example, calling an
over weight Mexican boy or man, "Gordo," as a nickname. Most of the time calling somebody 'gordo" isn't meant as an insult, but it could still be
hurtful to the target.
It would also be nice if we could all be referred to by our name like Joe, Dennis, or Goat, instead of some slang word derogatory or not.

Back to the original post. The articel, it was elementary at best.
Gabacho is not derogatory word.
Mexicans are not as sensitive as liberal Americans.
That would make Mexicans more conservative than liberal...
