Yikes. Another down-vote for El Caribe from me. It used to be my go-to place when traveling up & down MEX 5 to points south, but last year they
sold off my room before I arrived and left me with nothing (it was a VERY busy race weekend). I don't like their sloppy "reservations system" (notes
on a clipboard).

Is there a place to eat nearby, or do you have to drive into town for dinner?

No place very close. We usually drive the couple miles to the malecon to eat and people watch.

I'm not sure if the Baja Cantina is up and running but it is just a few doors down.
Like ehall said I typically take the few minute drive down to the melecon or The General for dinner. If you look at San Felipe on google maps it shows
a hotel icon where Los Angeles is.

I should also add that they have great service, really make you feel welcome and have someone on duty 24 hrs. You park in a secure courtyard that can
be seen from the office.

Posada del Sol. Right on the street about 200ft south of the southern end of the malecon. Next to La Morena market and across the street from the
costa azul.
Everything you need, affordable, run by wonderful people, secure, and close to anything you need.
Have a safe drive.

I like El Cortez. They property is walled in (sort of) with security guards (sort of). Rooms are big and clean, they take credit cards, have a great
restaurant and are walking distance from the strip.

Well guys, after all these great recommendations I ended up moving on. I got to San Felipe about 5:30 PM from Loreto. Was pretty tired from the long
drive, but after some fine tacos at a little stand I was rejuvenated.
None of the hotels drew me in, so I just got back on the road. I had a lot of daylight left. It didn't get dark on me until I was at the top of the
toll road grade on Hwy 2 heading towards Tecate. The border wait was less than 10 minutes.
The worst part of the whole drive that day was dealing with lots of on-coming traffic headlights on Hwy 94 stateside through Dulzura. Where the heck
were they all going?? Maybe getting away early for the fourth of July weekend.
So I made it to Carlsbad and into my own northern bed by 10:30. Long day on the road that started in Loreto at 7:30 AM. I wouldn't recommend making a
habit of that kind of power driving. It took me a couple of days to recuperate.
No b-tchin\' in the Baja.

Thank you, Tom, for the update! That is a long haul.
You probably got the Hollywood Casino (in Jamul) traffic in your eyes? Was that there the last time you went home via Tecate?
Elizabeth and I once did Bahia Concepcion to Oceanside in one haul... stopping to see sites along the way... got home around 2 am, I think (was back
in 2007). Never again! LOL
