The most alarming sentence was left unexplained: "In addition, plans call for southbound vehicle inspection booths to be operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspectors, and a secondary inspection area."

WTF? Is this regular Big Bro, or Big Bro Trump?

Another interesting sentence is:

"The 57-hour closure of the southbound vehicle lanes is necessary for the safe removal of a large steel and canvas canopy that currently covers a portion of the southbound car lanes, according to GSA."

They installed what they will be removing just a couple of years ago.

I wonder if they will ever staff the extra booths they built in each northbound lane.

Our tax dollars at work.

That is vague. Read a recent post, another site, a midweek
crosser, returning no., after 2+ hr. wait. asked CBP officer
why so long a wait, after yrs. of upgrades, 750 mil $, was
told in beautifully crafted govt. employees beaurocratic jargon,
(you know the usual budget cuts, etc. built in excuse), was
that we don't have the staff to adequately man the booths

Regular. Read about this several years ago during the Obama administration. The Feds want to know what you're taking with you on your way down south.

Added details from SD Tribune:

Following the closure, southbound lanes will be reduced from five to three for a two-month period. After that the plan calls for adding a fourth lane before Thanksgiving, and softening the current sharp 110-degree turn toward El Chaparral to 90 degrees. “It has a better curve, even though there are fewer lanes,” Kleppe said. GSA expects that as a result of the gentler curve, the flow of traffic will not change significantly from what it is today, despite the reduction in lanes.

This is going to be hell for the afternoon southbound commuters and weekend day trippers.

I thought the whole idea was to get rid of the sharp right, then left turns as you enter the border? What the hell was re-alignment all about?

Right now its three lanes on the 5 (along with the left shoulder too)
Three lanes to two for the 805. (right shoulder also)
Which one will loose a lane?
For decades,I've been a far right lane guy, not looking good

There is more to it. Feds also want to track your movement. Before, they didn't know whether you left the country and when, until you cross Northbound again. Now they will know.

Doesn't matter much, under the current legislation. But, if they amend it and tie Medicare and Social Pension to the residency, similarly to Canada, then they will have means to control it. Canadian Medicare, for example, requires 5 months physical presence in calendar year, and "full" Social Pension - 6 months presence.

I would avoid going in/out during those 2 days, but (probably) it won't be anything disastrous. This will be on weekend, while the heaviest Southbound traffic is weekdays 3 to 5 pm. Otay will get busier than normal.

This is what I was referring to, from the linked article:

"Following the closure, southbound lanes will be reduced from five to three for a two-month period."

That's a 40% reduction to an already backed-up rush hour situation for 2 months.

Five lanes reduced to three for a two-month period - this is a bad news. At 3pm-5pm it currently takes half an hour to get from the I5 to the gates, about one hour on Friday. Double the time now.

When will they ever learn to write documents for people, not for themselves...

"An additional eight 8 northbound vehicle inspection lanes with 15 additional inspection booths are also being constructed" - I can only assume that this will be NOT in El Chapparal, but rather, at the old Northbound site.

I think that's true. I've heard this before and have assumed the old southbound lanes and associated Mex buildings, which are currently not used for anything, will be converted into northbound lanes.

Eight lanes with 15 inspection booths? I wonder if they realize that 8 lanes with two booths each add up to 16 booths. Makes no difference though, only 8 will be manned, the others will sit empty as in the other northbound lanes.

Makes me mad. Right now, 1 PM Thurs, both the standard and ready lanes are over 2 hours while more than 25 inspection booths sit unmanned, the new tandem booths.

And millions are being spent on prototype Trump walls.

Bozos.
