36 Romantic Hours Off-Road in Baja - Outside Magazine

A few months ago, I got an email: “Hey Wes, interested in taking this thing for a spin?” One look at the attached pictures of a built-for-off-roading pickup carrying a luxury camper shell in its bed, and the answer was obvious: “Only if I can take it to Mexico and put my dog in it.” Over Easter weekend, I did just that.

LA would be a good place to drive a Land Rover, Baja not so good. Ask Roy the Squarecircle.

This guy has taken his old lifted Land River to Baja a couple of times. He bought it used, and well equipped for off-roading.

This guy loves writing articles on Baja. Once again his articles revolve around how empty everything is. Well it won't be that empty when you keep sensationalizing it and urging people to go there! Obviously Baja is no secret, but it borders one of the most populous regions in the world... (well, maybe not really, but SoCal is f'ing packed!)

In that pre-Google Earth and social media epoch, The Code was adhered to. It was based on a simple verity: if a locale had been transformational for you, and you had put the hard yards in to get there and to learn it, to know it, why in gods name would you broadcast the news, thus ruining the future experience not only for yourself, but for future adventurers?
