The Mission Walker, a new book in 2017 by a woman who was told she only had 3 months to live!

I was in Costco (San Marcos) a couple days ago, and as I went by the book table, look at what they had a pile of!

I had read about this while I was in Baja, two weeks ago and almost asked my wife to go on Amazon and order me a copy so I could see it when I got home!

I will give you more feedback after I read it, but it was way cool to see the 2012 book I co-authored (The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California, 1697-1834) was mentioned in the book's list of historical sources. There was a typo saying the year was 1934, and Howard Gulick is listed as Howard Bulick. Hardly a big deal... but you guys know me!

In a nutshell, the author was given 3 months to live (cancer) and she didn't accept that by first walking the El Camino Real between the 21 Alta California missions and then riding a mule (and walking too) on the Camino Real or close from Loreto to Tijuana...

I am anxious to see if she connected with our other Camino Real mule lady, 'Baja Bucko' or the other Nomad lady mule rider, 'Mula'!

It is hardback, over 311 pages, color photos, and I can't wait to get to it!

Edie tells her story of when she decided to walk and beating cancer:

Songs like a strong lady. I have wondered what I would do if I got a terminal illness.

As I get older I too think about what I would do if I had a terminal illness. I think I would like to do something like she did. Since I love college football maybe meet the coaches that I admire the most. Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Urban Myers, Mack Brown, Dabo Swinney, Bobby Bowden, Chris Petersen and Pete Carroll to name a few.

Haven't read the book yet, but I mean to . . . she was passing through the San Ignacio area when I was there last. I do admire her pluck.

Raymundo Vargas who rides with me and bajacalifornian and takes care of my mules in Loreto guided Edie from Loreto to La Purisima. Then another guide took over. Raymundo has his wife along during his part. He s delighted to find she survived. He has been wondering for 2 years what became of Edie.

Video from El Camino Real

See a short section of the mission road in this latest video post and hear Edie's comments as she is thrashed by Baja's thorny plants while riding a mule!

Today (March 29, 2018), Max Kurillo (El Camino Real/Mission Bell Historian) and I met Edie, The Mission Walker, at Max's home which easily doubles as an El Camino Real bell museum!

Holding our most recent books.

Edie's story is amazing and one of the famous bells (such as the one behind us) is responsible for saving Edie's life far beyond her doctor's prediction!
Her book, The Mission Walker is a must read to know what cancer can do, how she overcame it, and the walking on El Camino Real in Alta California plus the walking and mule riding in Baja California was a medicine no doctor would have ever prescribed!

Here is Max showing Edie some of his impressive El Camino Real bell collection from the early 1900s, yesterday:

Max is the foremost authority on the bells. He was a rare one hour guest on Huell Howser's TV show.
