Interesting cell phone option for Mexico

Dose this apply to you?

You must 55 or older.

You must live in an area that is covered by Telcel in Mexico.

T-Mobile just announced a new cell phone plan for people 55+.
To sign up you must go to one of their stores and show ID. This
Plan gives the following:

Unlimited texting, unlimited voice calls and unlimited LTE data on the phone.

The only limited part is tethering a computer. It is still unlimited data but
They limit the speed to 3G.

The cost is $50 per month for one phone and $60 for 2 phones. We were paying
About $85 per month for 2 phones so that was a $25 per month savings for us.
This price does include all fees and taxes.

The area we spend the winter is well covered by Telcel so this was a good upgrade
For us.

There are several reasons.

If you did not purchase a tablet with a cell phone plan, you need tethering to go onto the internet. We have two tablets that need to tether. The other option is to use WiFi but in some locations in Baja WiFi is so slow that full 3G speeds would be a joy.

Another problem is that if you are doing any kind of computer work that requires IE, or some other desktop program that uses internet, you need a laptop. This should never be the case but it still is.

I also use a laptop for looking at large tables of numbers such as currency conversions or financial reports. If their pages were formatted for a phone then you are probably okay. My experience is that many are not and a laptop is needed as a minimum.

If Facebook and some of the forums are your only internet usage then tethering is probably not an issue.

I do it all the time when there isn't Wi-Fi or the Wi-Fi is crappy.

Works all over the world.

I just switched, but I didn't have to go into a store. I did it over the phone, and the rate is $55.00/month for one line. And I don't live in Mexico, I just go over every couple of weeks.

You only need to go into the store if you want the 55+ plan. They check ID because they want to make sure you are over 55. I signed up the first day it was available and the kid in the store did not know about the plan. He looked it up and asked for my ID. I gave him my passport. He had never seen a passport before.

Not sure what is such a great deal about this. I use Telcel's Sin Limite pay-as-you-go plan. Unlimited texting and calling anywhere in Mexico, US and Canada for 100 pesos for 21 days. Also includes 1000 MB Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter. You couldn't use it to connect to a laptop, though.

For me the limitation is the unlimited data. Facebook and WhatsApp are not the internet for me. Telcel cuts you off after a month in the US.

Telcel Sin Limites is several times cheaper. But they have very low cap on data. 100 pesos for 21 days will buy you 0.3 GB data, plus 1 GB for Facebook/Whatsap. Makes sense with a good cable internet.
