Truck campers not allowed into Mexico - only with 1/2 ton Truck!
Say what? I have 1-ton with camper - so I'm now banned from entering Baja? Seriously?
Anyone here heard of this? Or been turned back at the border?

That may be true, but I dont think this puts an end to this controversy. We have all experienced uneven enforcement at all the border crossings.
But if ANYONE is denied at ANY crossing, I hope they will report it on Nomads.

David, thanks for that comment. It was late
last night so did not read all of it. After reading the last two pages (13 & 14) of that thread I feel a little better - but not much.

You cant get a TIP for a truck camper. I'd love it, if you could, but I've tried.
Some did get a TIP for a truck camper when the TIPS for RVs first started, but I havent heard of anyone getting one in a long time. Not saying it cant
happen, given how things change from crossing to crossing.

I have a place in the "free zone" or "hassle-free" zone, with respect to vehicles, in Sonora. We have had to get a TIP for a true RV for a few years
now.
Pretty sure these zone exemptions have always applied to only personal vehicles, not RVs. And it was just not enforced in Baja. Appears that has
changed.
Not a huge deal, really. About 50 bucks for a 10 year permit.
Where it could get dicey is if Aduana starts poking around all of Mexico and forcing any RV parked here or there to get a TIP. That would be a big
money-maker for Mexico and fairly easy for most to afford. Once upon a time, the RV had to apply at the border only, but they can be gotten by mail
OUTSIDE OF MEXICO.

Another snippet: "I crossed at Tecate 2 weeks ago in a new 24' motorhome. They looked at paperwork, took a
quick look inside and wished me a safe trip. No mention of a TIP."
I'm not expecting any problems - business as usual. |

The term TIP is often used for 2-3 different types of permits.
One TIP is the permit that "conventional" cars and trucks get to travel on the mainland, outside of the "free zone".
One TIP is the 10 year importation permit for true RVs (TTs, 5ers, Class A-C motorhomes, etc.
One TIP is the 10 year importation permit for boats entering and/or remaining in Mexico above a certain length.

What tourists need to pay (refundable deposit) to drive on the mainland beyond Guaymas. It insures you don't sell your car in Mexico.

You also need one in the "free zone" of Sonora if you are bringing ATVs or dirt bikes. Need one for the truck and the same permit can include up to 3
ORVs.

Very strange as friends visit me almost every week. With campers,motor homes. Not one was ever asked for this. Even today friend came from Utah camper
with race truck on trailer. Hit and miss baja rules.

Last week I went directly to "the horses' mouth" (the SAT office at the border entry point in Reynosa, Tamps. Mexico, with my F350 pickup and a Lance
1130 camper, they reviewed the unit and the paperwork.
"This unit is NOT allowed into Mexico" was the answer!!! I asked to speak with the custom director, and he also told me the same. Both the
registration, title, and the vehicle serial number and identification plates were reviewed. I told them I had to go to Mexcio for turismo....
The two suggestions were made:
1. If I could make arrangement with the border entry customs agent....ummmm?
2. Have the Texas motor vehicle dept change my veh classification to be a "MOTORHOME",,, IF it showed motorhome there would be no problem, and a 10
year permit would be issued.
Well, thats the story FROM THE HORSES MOUTH....and this is what the campers owners will face on arrival at the border.
