Malva

Last night SWMBO and I had one of our most memorable meals ever.
Made reservatios at 6:00, we were the only car in the lot, had the place to ourselves for nearly the entire meal which took anout 90 minutes. You can order a three course meal or a nine course tasting menu, we selected the tasting menu.
Here is what $3000 pesos will get you:

A basket of Sour dough mixed with current ash so it is black, served with pesto and a single chip tostada of something yummy.

Tostada with brined rabbit

Three glasses each of the house Sauv Blanc and Syrah Merlo bylend

Tuna poke with Serrano chili sauce or avocado sauce, 1 of each

Tostada with smoked yellowtail with rosemary in the smoking process

Rabbit sausage over risotto with beer sauce

Cream of green apple soup w poblano chili and mint

Garden greens salad with raspberry sauce

Grilled Yellowtail with cauliflower puree with pickled veggies

Duck breast over pumpkin puree with orange glaze

Panicota with sour citrus sauce: hers was a skull and mine a bone

Caramelized apples with goat-cheese ice cream

Our waiter was the sous chef so was very knowledgeable of the entire opprration. The executive chef is in Mexico City where he has a highend restaurant.

Parking is weird, basically a wide lane and you pick a side, took a couple of tries before we figured it out. The kitchen is open and it was pleasing to see the activity, extremely smooth-run operation, even when the house started filling up. On our way out, we stopped by and applauded the whole staff, big grins all around.

Outstanding meal.

Sounds great Jim. Will you share where on the 1,000 mile peninsula it is, please.

Yes, Km 96 carretera Ens Tecate, 22755 San Antonio De Las Minas, Baja California, Mexico...

but it seems to be a good idea, in general, to say what town, state, or even the km. marker a place in Baja is. I think some Nomads forget this forum covers all of Baja and not just Los Barriles or Punta Banda, etc. Thank you, Jim and Terry.

"Caramelized apples with goat-cheese ice cream"

I must ask, was it really good. Did it have a cheese flavor?

By the way, while I appreciate the effort that was put into this by Malva, It’s really not our style. Finca or Deckman’s is more our comfort level.

Well, it sounds like a great meal, not for every night, but you only live once.

Thanks for the review. We ate at Malva last summer and thought it was exceptional. At that time they had not yet gone to current menu. You just ordered from a variety of selections. The wine we had came from Mina de Penelope which is just below the restaurant. Next day we went to the winery and tasted some wine and purchased a few bottles. At the time they were running out of wine and it was going to be awhile before the new wine was bottled. I would not hesitate to go back for dinner and in fact we are planning on it.

No hint of cheese. On the way home we looked up "goat cheese ice cream" and there is a bunch of recipes so I guess it's a thing.

One thing I forgot to mention was how good the cream of green apples was - who in the world would ever thing to make a soup from apples? So good we were licking the bowls clean. Damn near 67 years old and SWMBO is picking up the bowl and licking it. Unbelievable.

I never caught where the house wine came from, it was labeled, but I didn't ask to look. My bad.
